    Cork belts - update

In a recent belt order I accidentally got a 400 grit cork belt. I offered to return it and the supplier said I could just keep it. It says 400 grit, but it looks and feels like a roofing shingle. Do these belts need break in? What is their primary advantage? I’ve never even researched these...

    hard milling follow up...

In a former life, I worked in a machine shop and myself and a friend did a few test runs in knife blades for kicks. Eventually we found that we could rough in the bevel with a flat mill and then go back over it with a ball mill, first with a relatively large step over ( I think .010), then...

    Handle question

I don’t want to get terribly off topic here. But, I heard that the exotic species in Texas took a huge hit with that big winter storm. I’ve heard reports of hundreds of animals dying on just one ranch. To bring this back full circle, I hope this doesn’t impact the knife handle market to badly.

    Looking for a short cut

Care to share a brand name? I’ve tried various gloves to no avail, but never the compression type or fingerless for that matter. I have to admit, when I first saw this thread I thought it was gonna be another guy looking for the easy way out. However it has turned into a very informative...

    Looking for a short cut

If I remember right you suffer from some type of neuropathy, if I’m wrong I’m sorry. That said, the vibration from the sander didn’t help out my arthritis any. I was able to do about 15 minute stints was all. My sander is old, and cheap, so I can’t speak to the tools ability to absorb...

    Handle question

Good to know. I have a pretty much unlimited source for elk, deer, and moose, but I had no idea about the sambar. I have noticed though on elk, if you can get a brow tine, or a G2 they have very little if any pith, depending on the animal of course. Moose tines aren’t bad either, but it’s tough...

    Looking for a short cut

I’m in the same boat (not Lupus but similar. I think that adding this little trick to my arsenal, is just one more thing to keep me going. As far as the pad goes. I figured a little scrap wood and glue was worth a shot, it worked but I’ll keep experimenting.

    Looking for a short cut

I tried the oscillating tool approach today, and I was pleased. I followed Ed’s directions and ground the Velcro off the pad. For me it was still too spongy and I felt like I was rounding over lines more than I’d like. To remedy the made a copy of the pad shape with some 1/4” plywood (on that...

    Looking for a short cut

I could be entirely off base here, but it sounds like you may not be getting all of the scratches left from the previous grit, before moving on. one thing I’ve tried with varying degrees of success is to cost the blade with magic marker, and then run it across the belt. This will show low...

    Some tasty walnut

Turkish walnut is my favorite wood to work with. I’ve been accused of using it to much if there is such a thing. Congrats on the awesome piece.

    super glue (cyanoacrylate) for handles.

Once upon a time, when I was into model airplanes, there was a super glue with a brush, built into the tip. I think it was Jet glue, can’t be positive, but I think that was it.

    Damascus Source Question

If I’m not mistaken the pre made blades are pre cut, by I think a laser, or maybe water jet. My guess is that some layer of automation is also used to grind the bevels, most likely a jig or something. I’m just theorizing here, I do not know any of this to be fact. With that I would assume he is...

    Damascus Source Question

I’ve used their stuff before and the blades turned out nice looks wise, and hardened fine. That said, I am at best a rank amateur, and I don’t have the training or eye, to spot troublesome material. That said I haven’t experienced any delaminations or fatal flaws. I would never say that they...

    Gonna try a dagger

As the title says, I have set a goal in 2021 to build my first dagger. A couple questions to start... What thickness bullet should I start with? I am going to be doing 100% of the shaping via stock removal. Are there any special considerations for the guard fittment? Or just do it like a...

    Stitching tool ?

Pretty much sums up my process, described in various ways above. One difference though. I use a stitch groover on the front side of my sheath, and run the stitch wheel in that grove. Then I drill, instead of a drill bit I just got a piece of drill rod and sharpened it to a point. This tends to...

    Jimping Preferences?

I use a checkering file as well. I tried 3 different files and settled on the most lines per inch, I think it was 30? Maybe 50? I just liked that it was barely there, but still added quite a good amount of grip.

    Lanyard Tube Sizing

I was fortunate enough to work for a company that regularly stocked reamers in nearly every imaginable size, and tossed them out regularly. I was allowed to collect the “burned up” reamers, and I would cut off the tip and re-dress the tip with a bevel. They work like a charm. I just use a .251...
