    First forged knife completed

Thanks, I love that look. I can honestly say I thought that was the easy route vs flat or dovetails. I’m not completely satisfied, but good enough for a shop knife.

    First forged knife completed

Second forged knife, first one completed. The other one is coming along. Integral bolster knives have been on my to-do list from the beginning. I just love the look.

    First forged knife completed

I took a bit of trial and error, but I got my first forged knife completed. I’ve been in love with integral bolster knives from the day I started. It’s not perfect and I left it rough intentionally. Still a ways to go, but it’ll come.

    Opinions on knife.

Some heft in a bushcraft knife is not necessarily a bad thing. For a bushcraft knife it looks small in my opinion, possibly more suited as a hunter type knife. I probably wouldn’t hollow grind a bushcraft style knife either, simply from a durability standpoint. Along those same lines I would...

    Spencer Aplin/Jordon Berthelot blade design

A couple things. I am not familiar with either make so I can not speak on their behalf. The following is only my undereducated opinion. The bevels, while unique and very hard to do, don’t look like anything out of the realm of possibilities. The fullers on the other hand would be exceptionally...

    First go

Thanks for the encouragement guys. It’s fun to do new things, and this can only expand my knife making repertoire. The forge came with a hunk of 1075, and I purchased some 1084, that I’m going to start with. It seemed like a good place to start. With both shoulders having been replaced I can...

    First go

Thank you. I think previous experience with stock removal helped a ton. More than anything I just wanted to try a couple things, and see what it meant to the final product. I think I’ll try a “real” knife tomorrow.

    First go

Picked up a forge finally and thought I’d give it a go. The point of the test was to make a knife shaped object, and give forging a shot for the first time. It’s just mild steel so not a real knife, but it was fun giving something new a whirl. I only ground it down to 36 grit, just to see what...

    First time forging questions

I finally got a forge and I’m itching to try a couple things. First things first, what is a good steel to start out with? I’ll most likely start making a bird and trout, or a small “hunter”, that’s what I’m the most comfortable with. Also what would be a good width and thickness to start with?

    Small bird and trout

Very nice. B&T is by far my favorite style, and that is one of the best I’ve seen.

    Stabilizing Juice

I use cactus juice and I haven’t had any issues with scales I’ve done. My setup is anything but professional, but I do follow the instructions to the best of my ability. I have done some box elder burl, dried and finished it, then weighed it. Then I submerged it in water for 3 days. The weight...

    Damascus bolsters

When you do that what do you use for the female side? I generally use what I would consider thin stock, and even with fine threads I don’t think there would be enough purchase to hold the bolster on?

    Damascus bolsters

For those of you that have done Damascus bolsters, what kind of pins do you use?

    Prentiss vice find

I am seriously considering buying a prentiss vice. Best I can tell it’s a bulldog 96 or 97. It’s massive. The guy wants $600. Good deal?

Should I forge M390 super steel? Or stock remove only?

2.5mm is only roughly .098 thick. Not anywhere thick enough to draw. Most smiths recommend .250 or thicker to start with. I suppose with a great deal of skill it could be done, But I suspect by the time your done it would be so thin it would be nearly worthless.

    Re-handle opinions…

A relative of mine recently requested a knife for them to gift to a friend. I sent him a knife and didn’t think much about it. The other day he contacted me with a picture of the knife, but with a completely different handle. When I asked him about it he said he decided to swap out the handle...

    Bolster pin issues

I spent the better part of the entire day finishing up this knife, just to have the pins show through the bolster at then polishing stage. My best guess is 2 different series of brass? I’ve never had this issue before, but I want to get it figured out before I cut these pins out and redo them.

    Dagger question

It’s about time I tried to attempt a dagger build. I’ve watched a few videos and I think I have basic idea down. Then one question that I do have is, what is a good metal thickness to start with? I do solely stock removal, no forging at this point. Obviously to thin could be a disaster, but I...

    Alligator skinning knife…

It has been requested of me to make a gentleman a knife for skinning alligators. Here in Utah we don’t have many gators and I have never had the opportunity to skin one or witness one being skinned. I was hoping someone on here would hail from a state more proliferate with American Alligators...

    Shop mods

My effective shop space got reduced, but my wall space doubled. With the reduction in size I have to down size the “enclosure” that I use to help contain dust and sparks from my 2x72. We have a Harbor Freight dust collector that I can rig up to help with dust, but I’m concerned about sparks. Any...
