    More Damascus trial and error.

Good deal. It probably would have helped had I not taken the photo in top of a dirty shop towel. LOL

    More Damascus trial and error.

Thanks. My picture taking is horrible. 99% of my issues would be fixed if I’d take a second and not rush

    More Damascus trial and error.

I made a press with a 20 ton air over hydraulic Jack from harbor freight. I started out trying to make crushed W’s and it kinda all went to hell from there. When it was clear I wasn’t going to get what I wanted I figured I try some stuff, so I did a 4 way weld (pic below). I drew that out and...

    More Damascus trial and error.

Mostly error but I think I pulled it off to some degree. A few things I learned and/or relearned throughout this project. 1- Never leave your knife in ferric chloride for 2 days! I got lucky and it wasn’t a total loss, but dang! 2- It is better to make you bar a touch long and possibly loose...

Affordable White Bone or Expensive Mammoth Ivory?

It could easily be the angle of the photo or any other of a thousand optical tricks. I think either way it will make a nice when your all through.

Affordable White Bone or Expensive Mammoth Ivory?

I’ll second that. The lines are off. I like it when the line where the handle meets the guard continues on to the blade.

Affordable White Bone or Expensive Mammoth Ivory?

For me, it would all depend on the intended buyer. For example at a dedicated knife show with a large expected attendance mammoth ivory would likely appeal to buyers and would be more likely to sell. The bone still looks great and it could be offered at a lower price. Lower price would be a...

    First Damascus try…

I actually made a press using an air of hydraulic Jack from harbor freight. I posted it up here something like shoulder saver 3000. It definitely has my mind going toward bigger and better equipment

    First Damascus try…

The beginnings of a. Little knife from that billet.

    First Damascus try…

It’s kind of hard to get a clean picture but here it is. This was an exercise in trial and error with zero regard or planning for end product rather than just to gain some experience. I accomplished that in spades, and ended up with 2 smallish bullets that I should be able to turn into knives...

    Mini press aka-shoulder saver 3000

I can certainly try. I will tell you right out of the gate, it’s not a real hydraulic press, and it uses a ton of air. That said it squashes hot metal, and my shoulders don’t hurt even after forging for hours. I made a Damascus billet that turned out nice.

    Mini press aka-shoulder saver 3000

That’s what I had in mind. Just slot the bolt holes.

    Mini press aka-shoulder saver 3000

I am 46, still too young, but what are you gonna do? I’ve got a fake hip and ankle as well. Don’t even have a good story to blame it on. Just plain old run of the mill arthritis. I was a welder my entire career so welding wasn’t an issue. That said the way I’ve got it set up with a few mods...

    Mini press aka-shoulder saver 3000

It’s a 20 ton air over hydraulic from Harbor Freight. I have 2 large stand up compressors, plumbed throughout my shop. It was super convenient to just plug it into the air hose on the wall. I had a spare foot activated valve that I’m using to control the up. I’m still looking for a good solution...

    Mini press aka-shoulder saver 3000

It’s a 20 ton air over hydraulic from Harbor Freight. Eventually I’d like to upgrade, that’s why it’s a tad over built. The frame is all 2x2x.25 steel tube, that I happen to have on hand. Both of my shoulders have been replaced, so swinging a hammer enough to get a decent forge welded pattern...

    Mini press aka-shoulder saver 3000

With my recently acquired obsession with forging came the need for a greater mechanical advantage than my shoulders can produce. Being that I am in the infancy of this deviation I thought it might be best to build something budget conscious, as well as being slow enough to allow me to progress...

    Forged knife #2

I had some extra shop time today and was able to get this one wrapped up. For me at least, it’s a big improvement over #1. The antler scales made things interesting, but we figured it out.

    Grinding Damascus

I’ll answer but with the caveat that the following is strictly my opinion, what works for you very well could be different. First “Damascus” is just steel. I say that meaning that there are no magical properties, and for me I treat it like one or the other parent steels. Second “Damascus”...

    Forging hammer source?

I am in the market for a good rounding hammer. I’ve been bitten by the forging bug and it’s not going away. If anyone has a spare they’d let go for a good price I’d be willing to help you part with it. If not where/whom would you buy a new one? I have a half dozen hammers that I have tried to...

    Five Stitches

Two of my worst cuts ever were from stainless foil. It not like you don’t know it’s sharp, but it’s sneaky. I had one that needed a few staples and I didn’t even notice until my shop looked like someone had slaughtered a goat in there.
