For sure the 2nd looks better on the web. As I mentioned before both look the same except for color when holding in hand. The only difference I can tell is the color of the no paint image is slightly not so "black" as the image that was painted. The wife insists she can tell no difference...

Somebody asked about paint vs no paint. Here's the same image engraved on opposite sides of blade. The black paint seems sharper, but I think that's a matter of camera focus rather than the laser. Holding blade in my hand they seem the same except the paint is more "black. Also the no paint...

What's going on in your shop?

Opaul, did you look a the assembly videos on YT? That's what I followed to assemble my laser. Wasn't too bad with decent video guidance

All 10 watt lasers are not the same - a lot depends on the diameter of the laser dot. Get ready to smell hot bone. I've not engraved any bone yet, but leather cutting and engraving sure does put a smell in the room.

That is impressive - For comparison I do engraving in SS at 100% at 300mm/min. That's about 1/10th of your speed. I'm impressive with your results.

Sure does look good - what speed?

Agree with Sean on how good the mark is from a diode laser. I've also got the OLM3 10 watt diode laser and the marks are good. Takes a bit of grinding if you mess up and need to re-etch. While it's a good mark, it's not .003" or even .002" deep marks as the OP was asking about. From what...

I think for a deep etch you'll need a fiber laser for that. They seem to be best for engraving in metal. That is from my reading and understanding - I have NO personal experience with fiber.

    Needle sizing

Are you referring to the needle size as in #22 or #24 that is sized per the thread size? OR, are you referring to the shank size that the machine clamps to? Seems like the Singer 29-4 uses the same needles at the Cowboy machines, what's called "industrial" needles having a round shank. While...

Trouble Heat Treating Baker Forge Bronze SanMai

What is the outer layer steel? Many times the outer layer won't test for Rc very good since it can be a low carbon alloy, or non-hardening SS. Looks like you'd need to test the core portion only, but that's sorta hard to do since both sides need to be parallel. Have you asked the vendor if Rc...

I also have the OLM3 10 watt diode laser. It does all I want need. I would really like to have the mark blacker, but it's really ok now. The 20 watt, or even better the 40 watt would be somewhat better. Not sure it would do anything better than the OLM3 with 10 watts does, only the 40 watt...

Ooops, I just noticed the Louisiana Hobby Guy and the last video are both on the 22 watt Falcon2, not the 40 watt you've got coming. I think they're similar, but at least the middle video is for the 40 watt.

This first video is from The Louisiana Hobby Guy who's usually pretty good and knowledgeable. Here are a couple more that might give insigth. Here's a setup 'n assembly guide:

I've been drooling over that Falcon2 - just imagine 40 watts of power. Things are really changing fast in the laser field - just a few months ago when I ordered my OLM3 that 10 watts was up there for a diode laser, now we've got 40 watts of power. Congrats Chris - you gonna enjoy it.

    Dennis Morland Birthday today

Dennis, at 59 you're still a "spring chicken" to us old folks. May you have many healthy years ahead.

Yes, for deeper and faster engraving. This 40 watt is intriguing - of course it's around $1300: https://store.creality.com/products/falcon2-40w-laser-engraver-cutter
