    sanding in tight corners/curves

I use an oscillating spindle sander. But I have the same problem Anthony described; drums just don't last as long as they should. I've tried several brands and haven't found one to last as long as I'd like. Prior to having the spindle sander I had small drums mounted on my drill press. It...

    Finishing belts

John, I've been using J flex belts to get my plunge lines even and symmetrical, and they work pretty good for that, but I agree, when I run any j-flex, you really feel the splice come across the blade. Which brought me back to the hand sanding to make it look finished in the end. -Aaron

    Finishing belts

Scott, This may be part of my problem. I have a single speed direct drive grinder, and it does seem like i'm going too fast for finishing work. I may have to look at hooking up a VFD on the motor. -Aaron

What's going on in your shop?

Chris, I love the sheaths on these, but have one question. Where do you attach the belt loop on these? I made a similar sheath, and had the belt loop integrated into the top portion, but it makes the knife hang sort of twisted at a bit of angle away from my hip. -Thanks, Aaron

    2 brick forge

Looking good. How long do you soak in Ferric? I tried stone washing a knife a little while back, and maybe I soaked it too long, but it didn't seem like the rocks did much to the acid etch. The stone washing was pretty minimal. I was thinking i might try with ceramic media on my next go...

    1095 Rust/Corrosion Test

According to what I read Ren wax is food safe once it cures. In the liquid form it has petroleum distillates present but as it dries it evaporates. As an alternative I just started using Briwax, which is all natural and food safe and pretty reasonably priced. I think somebody else...

    Finishing belts

Thanks for the input guys. I have been running up to 400 grit on the belt sander before switching to hand, but maybe I need to spend a little more time on it at the higher grits or try a better belt. I haven't tried gator belts but their sheets are great for hand sanding. The video had a lot...

    Finishing belts

So far I've done a lot of hand sanding to finish my knives, and it looks good, but it takes a lot of time and patience. My question is to those that do a satin machine finish, what do you prefer to use and why? Cork, Felt, Scotchbrite, norax? I have some limitations on my sander where the...

    2 brick forge

Looks like it turned out great. The bolt standoffs for feet are a great idea, I may have to incorporate on mine. -Aaron

    2 brick forge

I have a couple ideas. First off, i would take that 3rd fire brick and set it up against the opening in the back of the forge to keep more heat in. unless you're heating a blade longer than 8" or so, you shouldn't need the back open, it just lets the heat out. I would also flip it over so...

    Grinder drive wheel size

Justin, To get from diameter and RPM to surface feet per minute is fairly simple. I usually hear this talked about as surface feet per minute. So,if you take the diameter of the wheel multiply by pi (3.14) multiply by RPM, that will get you to inches/minute. if you divide that by 12 (12 inches...

    Cant get a satin finish...

Scott, how thick is that Hermes abrasive? I tried scotchbrite on my sander, and i didn't have enough clearance for it. I'm wondering if maybe this is a little thinner? thanks, Aaron

Soft fire bricks in the Dallas area?

Rex, I don't have anyway to monitor the exact temp in my mini forge. I go mostly by color and magnet. I know mine doesn't heat perfectly even and i cant set it to the desired temp and just leave it in place to bring it up to where I want it. Because of that I try to get the thicker portions a...

Soft fire bricks in the Dallas area?

I used a 2" sanding drum on a cordless drill. Made a heck of a mess but it cuts like butter and you can maintain the round shape pretty easily. Mine has a 2" diameter chamber and it tapers down on the ends to about 1 1/2". My theory was that the tapered ends would hold the heat in better...

Soft fire bricks in the Dallas area?

I don't have anywhere locally for firebricks either. I ended up ordering 3 from High Temperature tools. With the flat rate shipping it was about the best price I could find delivered. http://www.hightemptools.com/firebricks.html Just my two cents, i'm been using a two brick forge for a couple...

    Rust!!!!!!! Arghhhh!!!!!!!!

I had the same problem with O1. What I figured happened was I didn't let the sheath dry long enough. Now I let it sit for a couple days after complete before storing the knife in it. Far as oil, I've had good luck with pure mineral oil or vasoline. Both work well. -Aaron
