What are you going to make in 2016?

For 2016 I want to become a better knife maker. So much room for improvement and errors that I need to quit making. I'm also hoping to get some tools upgraded, I need to build or buy a real grinder instead of my little 1 x 42". I need to make a new file guide, and I'm also hoping to save up...

    15n20

I'm looking at buying some 15N20 to make some kitchen knives, and I was wondering what everybody thought about 15N20 on its own for a knife? I know its used in Damascus all the time, but I don't see it on its own very often. I have very basic heat treat methods, using a 2 brick forge and a...

    question about resale knife blanks

I agree with Anthony and Ed. I started off buying blanks and putting handles on. Told people I was a Knife Assembler not a Maker and always explained exactly where the blade was coming from. Now I do all stock removal including heat treat and tempering. I would say that makes me a Knife...

Butcher knife design critique and suggestions

I have the same thought process Anthony. I wouldn't buy another knife if I could make it. The Hudson Bay was just one i picked up before I got the knife making disease. Calvin's design looks very effective I'm sure it will work great. -Aaron

Butcher knife design critique and suggestions

I have an old Cold steel Hudson bay scalper that works great for butchering. Its similar to the Green River but has a bit better steel. I use one of my knives for field dressing and skinning and then switch this bottom one for the rest. -Aaron

    finally finished second knife

Nice looking knife, especially for only being your second. I'm going to nit pick too. The one thing i noticed was the small gaps between the brass liners and the wood. Pick up a small granite slap to sand on and true things up before glue up. I used to drive myself crazy trying to true...

    Sharpening Help?

Another vote for the Lansky system and a strop. I have their delux 5 stone set and have been using it for several years. It can be time consuming but the results are awesome. I do have some if the diamond stones for the set too but for some reason I still prefer the regular stones. Also I...

Christmas KITH Questions, PICS & Updates

I'm not in the KITH but my vote would be for the cleaver. Really like how the last one turned out. Second choice would be the classic on the left. -Aaron

Soft fire brick vs hard fire brick

I'm no expert, but I can tell you what I've learned. A few years back I tried to make a 1-brick forge with a hard fire brick because I didn't have a local supplier of soft bricks and didn't want to pay the shipping. It was an epic fail. The hard fire bricks seem to absorb the heat, so the...

    Just getting started

My latest finished knife. This one is for a friend's 14 yr old son. 1095 steel zebra wood handle nickel silver pins 8-9oz leather sheath. 4 1/2" cutting edge 9" overall The one thing I would change on this one, is I left the blade a little thick at the edge when I finished it out, so the...

    Finishing belts

John, I tried out some trizacts for the first time. You were right on the money. They cut nice and smooth, and cleaned up the marks left by my j-flex. I switched over at 400 this time around, but I think i'll buy some coarser ones next time i have order. Thanks for the advise. -Aaron
