Ok here we go... Knife number five

I second the granite plate. I picked one up for ensuring flatness on my scales and tangs, and now use it for all kinds of things. Some days it drives me nuts, but it sure helps with the knife coming together. Grizzly industrial offers them pretty reasonable. Overall its a great looking...

    Grippy scale material

I finished mine up to 320 grit, I think, can't remember for sure. It's interesting stuff, because of the polyester fibers in it, it's almost fuzzy like worn out jeans when you start sanding it, as you get to finer grits the fuzz sort of dissipates. I did not oil mine at all, but I think I...

    Grippy scale material

I've used Terotuf on a couple of knives and really liked the way feels for a user. I field dressed 3 deer with one last fall and was impressed with how it still stayed grippy when bloody. -Aaron

A couple I have in the works. My first hamon and a mid sized acid etched stonewashed. Both with stabilized boxelder burl handles. Still need to sharpen and finish sheaths. -Aaron

    Camp knife thickness?

It depends on what you do with your camp knife. Are you splitting logs and hacking down trees? Then it's probably not thick enough. Are you making small traps, prepping food, trimming branches, and slicing up game? It'll probably be just fine as long as the heat treat is good. Personally I...

What Calipers do you like? and what angle measurement tool to get?

Plus one vote for Mitutoyo. I have digital and dial ones at work. They hold up well and the jaws are hard. My HF dial caliper at home has slightly lost the points on the jaws. Given my 7 yr old dropped it jaws first on the cement floor, so that may have something to do with it. For the...

Need advice on matching platen corners, raduising glass, etc.

I had the same problem with my platen a while back. Picked up a piece of ceramic glass from boss and it made a world of difference. I threaded a 1/4-20 socket head screw below it to act as a shelf for the glass to reference, and then used VHB tape to hold the glass on. Been attached for...

What Calipers do you like? and what angle measurement tool to get?

I may be old school but I am a fan of dial calipers. I live in North Dakota and when it gets cold in the winter the screen takes a while to warm up. Plus the batteries don't handle the cold well. Maybe when I get a heated shop I won't care as much. -Aaron

1x30 or 2x42 for the beginner

I'm a beginner with a 1x42 grinder. It works but I wish I had a 2x72. So many more options for belts and places that supply them. Just my 2 cents... -Aaron

    Advice needed- Crack during Tempering

I appreciate the input guys, lots of details to keep an eye on. I was wondering about how long to wait till tempering and if that had an impact on things. I guess I've always cleaned the scale off before tempering, but maybe I shouldn't be? Does it hurt anything to temper it with the scale...

    Advice needed- Crack during Tempering

I tried putting a hamon on knife for the first time and ran into a snaffu while tempering. After tempering the blade cracked at the the choil. I heat treated 2 other 1084 blades at the same time, and had no issues. The only difference was the attempt at a hamon on this one, but it doesn't look...

What's going on in your shop?

Finally got my new Baldor motor for my grinder installed, she ain't a pretty grinder, but she serves the purpose till I can get a 2"x72". I have lots of variety in the works: trying a pocket cleaver for the first time, working on a couple steak knives for a kitchen set, and a few random...

    Buying a grinder or sander

I have a 6 x 48 that I use for rough sanding, but it doesn't work well for me doing bevels and plunges. I have a homemade 1 x 42, that I picked up at a farm auction for $30 that works pretty well for everything. As far as flats, I picked up a ground granite surface plate and put some sand...
