    Grain refining O-1 tool steel

As far as I know, I believe you will find that all 01 has sufficient vanadium in it for fine grain, though sometimes not always listed in general descriptions. The percentages of ingredients will also vary, at least slightly, + or -, with each fresh pour.

    Grain refining O-1 tool steel

Mike is correct. If doing stock removal with 01 there is no need to refine the grain any farther than it is. The grain size is very fine as it comes, so long as it is precision ground and spheroidized annealed bar stock. I have found that a one hour stress relief at 1200° to 1250° with an air...

    Still trying

Looks very nice, but I would suggest you lose the artificial sinew. It always looks artificial.

    New Ball Grip Scalper

I had a skunk skin hat in the seventies. I put red beads in the eye holes.

    New Ball Grip Scalper

Just finished yesterday. A plain Jane scalper style with a 8"x1 1/4"x1/8" blade of 01 steel, and a walnut grip with a deer rawhide wrap laced on with deer rawhide thong. There are two 1/8" steel cross pins through the grip and tang under the rawhide. The sheath is of vege-tan leather, welted...

    Whats faster and why

From all I have read, canola oil is the fastest of the vege oils, and Tai Goo, "ONE", on this board, reports good success with it and 1095. Of course, a formulated commercial oil such as Parks #50 or similar is going to be superior.

Help, my EvenHeat Oven is giving me trouble

Bruce, did you have to replace the thermocouple, or was a connection problem?

    Thoughts on tapered tang

Hogging out hollows saves time and makes getting flat tapers easier, as you have less steel to bring down perfectly flat. The hollows grind out fast and much easier than having to bring the entire surface down by flat grinding. You will see if you try it both ways.

    Ideas for oven blade fixture

I cut slots in fire bricks with a masonry blade in a Skil saw. Raises the blade edges closer to my thermal sensor, and holds heat for faster recovery after opening then closing the door.

    gluing on scales

I fill them. It does add a good bit of strength, but I also use pins for shear strength and insurance. I once had to change out some buffalo scales done that way. The pins drove out pretty easy, but I could not break the scales loose with a four pound hammer. Had to burn them off. That greatly...

How do I find the center point of a circle?

You can buy center finders from expensive to cheap plastic ones. You could make your own, but I don't remember the exact angle used. They are used like a square, but angled. Using it you draw 2 lines, or as many as you want. As long as the part is round, the lines are center of the diameter. I...

:-( First time since I started using Parks 50. Broke!

May be the photo, but that grain seems a tad coarse as I see it.

    Kiln Heating Multiple Blades

I would suggest no more than three in a batch. I have an Evenheat 22.5. My blades are set edge up in grooves cut in a fire brick, putting them close and centered until the thermocouple. With your larger oven, you might consider adding a brick or two to lessen air space. The fire bricks will...

    a quick quenction

For 1095, canola is faster than peanut oil, and speed is critical with 1095. ATF will do for 01, but there are better oils. ATF will not work for 1095 however. It is much too slow. If you insist on 1095 as a common steel for your work, you really need Parks #50, or an equivalent commercial oil...

which Needle File set to buy?

Yes. If you want good needle files, you have to spend more. Brownell's needle files are Swiss made. Take care of them, and they will last a very long time.

    Is it cheating?

If they are blanks, what does it matter? If already finished, that would matter.

    Is it cheating?

I see nothing wrong with that. Doesn't take a lot of skill to produce a blank. The skills come in with what is done with the blank. Whether your design or the suppliers. A number of well known makers have their designs cut out in blanks by someone else to save time and not have to buy expensive...
