    Waiting between quenching and tempering

Seems to me that you are slowing/retarding MF. What is the advantage of having the oil that hot, and then soaking for hours?

    Waiting between quenching and tempering

At just non-magnetic, 1414°, is not hot enough to allow the steel to fully form a good homogenous solution of the iron, carbon, and other alloys, if present. With the more common carbon steels, that requires a heat range between 1450° and 1500°, with 1475° being ideal for most, and about maximum...

HT oven & oil recommendations needed

If you are serious enough to buy an oven, determine the largest size you might need, then get the next larger. If you're willing to spend near a grand, then some over should not be a real problem. I use Parks AAA oil for 01, but as said, any oil in that cooling range will be fine. 01 is not too...

Which epoxy do you use, and why?

I have used Devcon 2 TON slow set for thirty years. I've never had a come back for loose grip problems. I have a bone slabbed knife I made in the late nineties which was lost in a flood in 2008, recovered from wet mud 4 months later, and still seems as sound today as it ever was. I am not...

Edge test using a 1/4 in round rod. Did not flex back.

I don't see how it would matter as to the rod metal as far as the flex. It bent, and did not return. Brass would make no difference in the result.

    First try with leather, but...

Next time, if you find marks such as that before finishing, you can burnish over them and at the least diminish their effect.

    First try with leather, but...

After deglasing try dampening the sheath first, with water, as you would prepare the leather for carving, then allow it to half dry, then apply the dye. The water will cause the cellular structure to open a bit and absorb the dye better. Try it on a piece of scrap to see how wet it needs to be...

    Cryo?

Actual cryo requires more than just dry ice.

    1095 Annealed?

Assuming you "fully" harden the 1095, a temper range of 725° to 750° will give you a very good spring.

    finishing with a forced patina??

Patina is the residue, discoloration, and surface condition that is formed on metal, wood, and other materials, caused by oxidation over time. Why would you want to apply a patina only to the blade, and have a brand new looking shiny grip?

Fat Belly Bowie Handle Job WIP

That is not documentation. That is simply an authors assumption, or just a repeated falsehood. There is no known evidence, or documentation for just blades being exported from Europe. For one thing, the French guilds would not have allowed it, and who was going to want to have to put grips on...

Fat Belly Bowie Handle Job WIP

Don't know about the edge condition, but there is no evidence or documentation of trade knives being shipped without grips in the 18th c.

Fat Belly Bowie Handle Job WIP

That ammonia patina does not look like natural patina at all. A quick and easy method is to apply cold blue that is used to touch up guns. It is nearly instant and has some brown in with black. You can also go back over areas you might want changed. A fresh wipe takes most of the previous color...

Need help with my heat treating

First, get your temp controls squared away. Your variation in hardness readings may not be accurate because it is difficult to get an accurate reading on other than a parallel flat section 90° to the probe. Also thin sections can be harder than thick sections, depending on the steel. You may...

Black Dye rubbing off on hands

Vinegaroon black will not rub off as it turns the leather black by chemical reaction rather than by pigments. Iron/steel shavings, nails, rusty nuts and bolts, ect. dissolved in vinegar. Requires a few weeks for the solution to form. The iron must be clean of any oils, plating, or coatings. When...

    W2 Rc question

The old common mix for brine is based on percentage that works out to about 13oz per gallon of water. A common box of salt is 26oz. Using too much salt will slow the cooling effect, and not achieve the maximum hardness desired in water hardening steels.

Need help with Even Heat Oven Not Wanting to Start

After pressing start, and getting the ----, go back and press enter, then it will go. They are rigged that way in case you decide to change something. Sort of a final chance to be sure of your set up.

Difference in Even Heat ovens, KF vs. KO vs. KH

If you have more than one blade in, you are killing power to the coils with the safety, and will have to wait longer for the heat to re-stabilize. Maybe no harm, but certainly not good with a soaking heat. I've had my Ramp Master 8 or 9 years now, and have never even come close to touching a...
