    HF Chisel Set

S7 calls for 1725F for 20 min. with a temper in the 500F to 800F range. I'd never attempt a steel like that in a forge for a knife, but for hot work tools, I bet you get could something real useable with less hold time and drawing the struck end with a torch.

    HF Chisel Set

You can get 1" x 6' of S7 for $120 on McMaster Carr. You can probably find it cheaper if you look around a bit. Cold work chisels aren't worth a hoot for hot work. Cheap ones are worse.

    Handles coming apart

This is how I prep a tang. Note the fuller ground in and the two larger holes. The fuller does two things. It makes it easier to get a gap free fit, and it creates a pocket that cannot squeeze out and adds surface area for shear and peel strength. First, ditch the 5 min epoxy. You want slow...

    Epoxi

Yeah, it's advertised as "toughened epoxy."

    Question on this Quenchant

8670 is the "deepest" hardening of the bunch I listed. On paper anyway. I said "deeper" in comparison to shallow hardening steels like 10xx and W's. I do believe those steels that I listed are all properly classified as "deep hardening." Is Duratherm 48 comparable to AAA? That's what Enquench...

    Epoxi

West Systems G Flex is the only epoxy that I've tried that significantly resists "peel" failures, which are the type that seem most likely to be normal use-induced. Other than environmental changes, which does a really good job of taking apart inadequate epoxy joints.

    Question on this Quenchant

Thought I'd offer a comment on the Enquench Medium 2, which I've been using on all the deeper hardening steels I use, 80CrV2, 52100, and 8670. I quench almost everything unground, in stock thicknesses from around .085" to .200". I use 3 gallons of oil, in a 5" SCH 10 SST pipe with about 18" of...

    Never heard of them.

Some of my first straights - need to make mwoar razors!

That would be "as quenched." Looks like I missed that up in my first comment. I never personally have tempered below 300F. I would expect something around 64-64.5 HRC at that temp. I normalize 1650F and do two cycles at 1460F followed by cooling in still air. Then austenitize at 1475F - 1500F...

Some of my first straights - need to make mwoar razors!

52100 will do 66+ as without cryo and without over austenitizing.

    Walker/TKroenlein KITH

I finally got a little sunny weather so I could get some proper pictures outside. Don't be fooled though, it was cold and windy, and my fingers got numb in the few minutes it took. Brad sent an awesome package, that included the knife, two kydex sheaths, a padded knife case, a very well done...

Ordering from Amazon... what do you guys think?

The poor description and the unknown seller is all red flags to me. Here's the blurred street view of that residential address.

Ramping Oven from the Preheat to the Soak Temp

Didn't Larrin test the preheat/ramp/prequench business with AEB-L and conclude there was no measurable differences between that and just sticking it straight in a fully heated oven? Ramping in industry is used to minimize distortion in much more complex parts. Since there is nothing complex...

Heck of a deal on a 10L dewar

We got a sst bucket at work that's big enough to hold a couple real big bearings we use. We just have the gas guy come by and dispense it right in the bucket. Buncha rednecks kickin it around half a day then fishing a bearing out of it...no casualties yet.
