    Calculating steel

I don't forge a whole lot, but enough to have a plan when I do. I forge 1/4" stock mostly. I figure it it terms of finished dimensions, plus material loss. So if I want an 1/8" thick knife, 1" wide and 10" long, I'd start with 1/4" thick, 3/4" wide, 6" long, and grind off extra thickness or cut...

    ban

It's a problem because "leravo" isn't just a scammer pos. He is a scammer pos that has figured out how to take over an account on this particular forum. To more directly relate the problem, imagine you try to log on tomorrow morning, but you can't. That's because scammer pos has managed to...

Safeguard Against Hackers - Change Your Passwords & Turn on Two Factor

I see there is an older hacked account here, posting stuff in other languages. I'm on another forum where a scammer has figured out how to get into established accounts, and take them over. This can be defeated by changing your password, and turning on two factor authentication. Be wary of...

    Blades Warping

Straightening a warped blade in the temper: 1) Do your first temper cycle as normal. Crooked, warped and all. No changes to normal tempering. 2) After your first temper and the blade is cooled to ambient, assess the amount of warp, and mark the "inside" of the warp. 3) Using an example...

    Blades Warping

No. Stress relief is a post profiling and drilling step performed prior to heat treating. There are industry numbers for this. It is one notch above tempering and one notch below annealing. Usually a couple hours at something like 1200F-1250F depending on steel.

What's going on in your shop?

My much anticipated dewar acquisition finally happened. As with any new shop thingy, I was elated to unbox it and look it over and make a new home for it. My euphoria was quickly diminished when I realized I could never use it without the missus' help, due to my stiff, abused shoulders weren't...

    Epoxy ??

For your application, have you thought about hard solder like gunsmith's use? ~450F melt, and very strong.

What's going on in your shop?

After only 4 1/2 short years, I finally got tired of not having a second 20A 220V plug so I could use my grinder and my oven simultaneously, so I puckered up and spent $150 for some 10/2 to run the length of the shop. Actually I was kinda happy to find 100' roll for that money. But now I won't...

    Epoxy ??

Regular JB weld is a 24 hour cure product isn't it? As far as the rest, there are some hit and miss epoxies out there. Some of the hardware stuff kicks off like lightning and is sugary from the get go. Some of it doesn't seem to get real hard. But regardless of what epoxy you find like...
