    Whetstone suggestion?

The guys here will never steer you wrong. As you’ve read above, there are a dozen ways to skin a cat. No matter which route you take, one of these belongs in every toolbox, tackle box, glove box, or bugout bag on earth. It’s too cheap not to have and works like a champ. Is it going to...

Shop Music Thread- what are you listening to today?

Funny thing about the passing of time- you're no longer beholden to the old corners that you painted yourself into at the time. Remember when the BeeGees weren't cool? Shoot, the BeeGees were freaking awesome. It's great to listen to music or bands with fresh ears, without having to...

Shop Music Thread- what are you listening to today?

One I always go back to when I'm getting burned out on whatever musical kick I've been on for a while...

    Whetstone suggestion?

If you want my honest advice- One of the best sharpening systems on the planet is a 1x30 belt sander from Harbor Freight. Grab a 220 ceramic belt and a 600 ceramic belt, (and a 15 micron if you want to get super polished edges). Zip, zip done. Finish on a leather strop. (edit: harbor...

    Whetstone suggestion?

Just be aware that the “grit” of one type or brand of stone may have almost no relationship to the grit of another. It’s not even remotely standard like sandpaper. For example, a tremendous value setup for the money is a King 1000 waterstone and a King 6000 waterstone. followed by a leather...

    Condensation on Milling Machine

Bob has listed great products. In the meantime, chainsaw bar oil works as a good sticky coating and you can find it anywhere and it’s cheap. That can be a stopgap until you get better stuff. Definitely cover your machines (particularly a lathe) when not using it. I use old moving blankets...

    Handles coming apart

Exactly. It’s not that 5 minute epoxy won’t hold, it holds well. The problem is that it can start to kick before you get everything clamped and the air squeezed out. You will often get gaps. And God forbid you get the liners wrong because you can forget pulling the handle apart and fixing it...

    Handles coming apart

All great points, particularly the need to scuff everything. I’m also going to point to the Windex. Windex is a wonderful degreaser and I use tons of it, HOWEVER, it will ruin a glue joint if you don’t get it off your materials. It leaves a slick film of its own. So don’t abandon the Windex...

    AEB-L steel, pro's/con's

You're not the first person who has mentioned that. But I have no proof one way or the other. It makes darn good knives whatever it is.

    AEB-L steel, pro's/con's

I think there's definitely something to that. I have received plenty of AEBL that had a bow in it, and sure as anything I know I'm going to fight warp from that piece of steel. The stuff I get from Aldo is definitely cut from a coil.

    AEB-L steel, pro's/con's

When mine warp it’s usually in cryo. Everything comes out of the quench plates perfectly flat. Once in the cryo is when it slowly gains a warp. I don’t mean to imply that they all do. I’ve probably done 200 long kitchen blades had 15% - 20% of them warp but it’s easily corrected. If i’m...

    Camillus MK1 Knife - Questions

Here's a link to a good discussion on this very knife (or pattern of knives): https://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/302321-dating-camillus-mark-i-usn-knives/ The knife you have is in very good condition, particularly the stacked leather handle. Just to put your fears to...

    AEB-L steel, pro's/con's

Great point. Warp is a real thing on AEB-L and you'll have to deal with it on anything thinner than 1/8. It's just part of it when you're dealing with AEBL. You'll get very good at warp mitigation and correction, because sometimes it just wants to warp no matter what you do. Another...

    AEB-L steel, pro's/con's

I use AEB-L for everything. Kitchen knives, hunters, and pocket knives. I love the stuff and my customers love it. 440C is a great steel particularly for salt water environments, but AEBL makes a better slicer that is easier to sharpen. AEBL will get rust spots if left wet. That is where...

I've always thought these were really cool, even just for conversation pieces. Good job on that.

Knife identification: WW2 Shop made Fighting knife, unknown maker

that last picture appears to be a different knife. The handle has a center palm swell and a double bevel. The first nine pictures are a knife with a single bevel and a swedge with a bump towards the pommel. The first nine pictures appear to be an M1 bayonet (the later issued, shortened...

    Damascus

I did the same thing. I wire brushed it and cleaned all the actual scale off. Then I figured I ruined it so I etched it with ferric to turn it black again, LOL. I spent the first couple of years trying my best to make a perfect knife, only to turn around and fret and struggle over how to...

    Damascus

I did a few intentionally “rustic” knives for a special request. I felt a little uneasy even though I did exactly what the customer wanted. He wanted hammer marks and a little scale. It was a design collaboration of sorts. Not only was he thrilled with the end results but a lot of people...

Your thoughts on the deep carry debate

I'm just a clutz. I have scratched my car / truck fender more than once because I forgot I had a metal clip hanging on my pocket as I leaned over trying to see why the POS would not run today. Belt buckles are good for that, too. That's why all the cool kid mechanics used to turn their belt...

Your thoughts on the deep carry debate

I like old school slipjoints for daily carry. I prefer small ones that fit in the little “watch pocket” of my jeans or in a leather pocket slip if I’m wearing dress pants. If i’m working I wear a belt knife because i hate going in my pocket or flipping/folding 1000x a day, especially with...
