What's going on in your shop?

It's been quite a while since I was active here. 2022 was a crazy year of very high highs and very low lows. I didn't make a lot of knives. Things began to settle out in the fall and I got back into the shop with a vengeance. The time away from the grind was helfpul. (pun intended LOL)...

    Disc sander

I used to use a rubber pad but now I just use a piece of rhynowet stuck to the aluminum disc with 3M feathering adhesive. I use my dunk bucket just like I do on the grinder. I gave up on the rubber pad because mine was too thick and was rounding edges and when I stopped using it I discovered...

    Inside the waistband holster...

Seriously, that is one beautiful holster. Like most people, I have a drawer full of kydex IWB holsters. While some models are more comfortable than others, no kydex holster will ever feel as nice and comfy as leather. I have a really nice leather IWB holster and it feels like a silk pillow...

Beautiful job on that, Steve! That looks downright factory.

    Everyone remembers their first…..

I am forever and always amazed at what the old world masters were able to pull off. If you even recommended their best tools and practices today people would think you were insane or an utter nincompoop. Everyone knows before CNC it was all semi-sharp rocks and pokey sticks.

That blade geometry looks very involved. Best of luck to you! I hope you'll post updates to this thread as you go.

a good example of what NOT to buy

Mr Pete 222. His really old videos go by Tubalcain. He's the Youtube Shop Teacher. He's a retired fellow and serious youtube treasure.

Stress relief for 15N20 - will it help with warping issues?

You aren't kidding about doubting that it even hardened. It's dead soft out of the plates and that really freaked me out when I discovered that. Steve's advice calmed me down. I'm no metallurgist but I do a fair bit of research, and up until then I had not even heard it mentioned that it...

a good example of what NOT to buy

I wonder the same thing. How many old guys pass and leave a full workshop down there that gets sold with the house? Every watched Mr. Pete on YouTube? (Tubalcain). The guy's basement looks like a Detroit production shop in its heyday. He said in one video that he disassembled his...

Stress relief for 15N20 - will it help with warping issues?

I made a punch version. I had plenty of 1" brass rod laying around so I drilled one end and JB Welded some carbide rod in. I used 3/8" carbide rod and rounded it on the grinder after it was all glued up. I wanted to know how much pounding it would take to fracture the carbide (or the JB...

    Knife sharpener for non-knifemaker?

Great suggestions. I think I'm going to share these links on my knifemaker page because I'm always being asked for recommendations. I need something better to offer other than "anything that doesn't involve the back side of your electric can opener". I'd say "you'd be surprised" but as...

    Hand sanding Lubricant

Mobil 1 synthetic in 5W or 0W. I believe that your sanding technique, the pressure you use, the paper you use all make it a fairly personal thing. I tried everything and had been using windex for a long time. Once I got onto Mobil 1 it was a revelation. Mobil 1 does not cut as fast, but it...

He's a great guy. Very interesting guy, too. He is also an accomplished gunsmith.

    lets talk serrations!

Yes, that's a lot of money. Until you divide that cost over 100 knives, at which point $5 a knife to save yourself 100 hours with no wrecked blades is really, really cheap. Not aimed at you, but for any new maker reading this: It might take a hobby maker five years to make that many knives...

    Flintlock watermelons...

It never fails to shock me when I see impacts from the old ball and powder guns, even when I know what to expect. I can't help but imagine the scene during the battles of the Revolution fighting in linear formation. When the man to the left or right took a hit it must have been horrific to...

    Case re handle...

Perfect handle choice for that knife, and I love the throwback CASE TESTED sheath! You turned a junker into an heirloom.
