    drill bits for tang holes

i took your advice and got that stick lubr for my bandsaw. What a difference! So much better than squirting oil on everything and all the mess that comes with that. My little tube of Boelube has lasted forever but when it runs out i’ll use the stick lube for drilling too. That’s really good...

    drill bits for tang holes

I believe you. About a week ago I was using my go-to "F" drill bit. I tried to remember when I bought it and I couldn't. It lives in my drill press. I replaced the previous one some time ago because it got somewhat banana shaped over time because I turn it slow and use a whole lot of down...

    VFD

Make your life soooo much easier and get a 3-phase motor. Seriously, it's like $200 but it will run for years and years. A VFD will change your life. It's not even worth considering finding a work-around for single phase. If you're going to run single phase then a step pulley is your answer.

    Recommendations for Kitchen knife set

If you just want a set of knives that are great bang for the buck, grab a set of Forschner / Victorinox. Probably the best set of starter knives you can buy for not much money. Use them hard and learn what you like and don't like. These knives are perfectly fine, and fantastic for what they...

What's going on in your shop?

I took a pretty long break. You may even call it a layoff. It seems that everything I get interested in becomes a full time job, and something had to give, and it was knifemaking's turn to give. It was good time off. I just completed a set of three kitchen knives that I'm really happy with...

6 pole motor - how many RPM would you run it?

absolutely. low speed monster- and smooth at low speed, too.

6 pole motor - how many RPM would you run it?

Yes you can. Almost all motors can be run at twice rated speed. Speed isn’t what hurts induction motors, heat is. If you do a lot of high pressure hogging at high speed just keep an eye on the motor. If you can’t put your bare hand to the case because it’s too hot then let it run unloaded...

    Stacking AEB-L During Heat Treat

I don’t stack them. Four blades is the most i like to do at one time. I can pre-quench and final plate quench that many without feeling like i need to rush. I’ve done six at once but I feel like I’m rushing and pushing the soak times too short / long to keep them in the window. I’ve also...

Liner lock folder with nice Koa

It’s always your little understated details that blow me away. The thumb hole being a slot, and the access relief being a matching slot. Seems simple, but that’s the kind of forethought that separates your work. The accents like the pivot bushing, and the jeweling on the inside of the liners...

    drill bits for tang holes

I believe those are brand names, not grades. I have bought some of all of them and see no difference. Cobalt does hold up longer for drilling stainless, but if you have a drill doctor handy it doesn’t really matter. A quick touch up = a new bit. I don’t sharpen anything thinner than 1/8...

    drill bits for tang holes

All great replies here. Any cheapo drill bit will do what you’re trying to do if it’s sharp and you’re running slow. The bit may not last long, but even the cheapest chinese drill bit will drill a bunch of holes in annealed steel. The steel is the culprit here, I’m convinced. I also buy...
