Questions about working with real jade.

OK. I see that the reconstituted stuff is the way to go. I just order some. The vendor says it can be worked with conventional tools. I imagine it's pretty brittle though. Any other considerations? Thanks again, Ray

Questions about working with real jade.

I'm sure I've seen knife handles with real jade worked into them somewhere (like spacers). Am I right about this? Does anyone have any tips on working with jade? Cutting, drilling, polishing, etc? Thanks, Ray

    Commercial welding forges

Broke it all down again. Changed the angle of the burner tube. Lowered the floor inside to keep the piece out of the blast. Relined with fire clay/sand mixture. Fired it up. 1500 in 10 minutes. 2300 in 20 minutes. Topped out at 2460 at about 28 minutes. (Using a McEnglevan Melt Master...

    Commercial welding forges

Thanks for all the help, links, etc. My forge is very much the same as Indian George's. One mistake I made was cutting the Kaowool for the lining too long. So, rather than cut it to size I just overlapped it on the bottom - which raised the floor about 1 1/2 inches and puts the work in the...

Wayne, As I look around I see several versions of Kast-o-lite. Any one of them more suitable than others? Got a source? I guess if I end up buying 55#, I should look locally and avoid shipping costs. Thanks again, Ray

    Damascus Forge inside coating question

Hey Ed, This is sounding better and better. Where might I find this stuff? Got any idea how much I should buy to coat the interior of a tube 10 inches in diameter and 22 inches long? Don't want to buy 50 pounds if one pound will do.

    Oregon/Washington Damascus Makers - Question

Thanks for the replies. Finally decided I can't afford to wait and just went and bought a piece cut to size from a steel yard ($70). Ended up with a piece with 3/8 thick walls. Should last until I drop.

    Damascus Forge inside coating question

For years I've used fire clay/sand combination to coat the inside of my forge (over the Kao Wool) with good results, but if some has a better product, I'd be interested in hearing about it. Thanks

    Oregon/Washington Damascus Makers - Question

After 14 years I have finally burned through the shell of my propane forge. I had designed mine using Wayne Goddard's "dragon's breath" forge plans. I was using a piece of 10 inch pipe about two feet long. Finally just heat rotted through. I've been calling around Portland but haven't had any...
