    Ball Bearings / Pivots ?????

OLD, OLD thread, but it bears on your previous post/question......... Personally, caged bearing with ceramic balls is what I use. It's not specifically, or only the bearings, or the type that makes for smooth or rough actions..... it's having precision tolerances throughout the folder... as...

    Pivots,washer,bearings

Sorry, but you're not making much sense. Could you please be a bit clearer as to what exactly it is that you want to know?

Recommend a forge and forging hammer(s)

You folks know how pointed my views on forges are. :) It sounds as if you are intent on buying..... so with that in mind, I will says this.... -Buy a SINGLE burner forge, one that is large enough to do whatever you need/want to do, and avoid multiple burners. (if you need more info, just let...

    African Blackwood

I like at least 2" X 1 1/4" but anything bigger is always of interest. :)

    African Blackwood

Blackwood is my personal favorite handle material. And a big YEP!! Before I stopped going to the Eugene show, I would always stop at Gilmer on the way home! The biggest issue I have with Blackwood these days is finding suitable sizes for knife handles..... everybody wants to sell blocks...

New dude, looking for an education

Welcome to KD Austin. Thank you for your service! I'm a retired E7 myself. First, when you're talking folders of any type, you are talking Advanced Knifemaking. Personally, I didn't even attempt making a folder until just prior to achieving my ABS Mastersmtih rating. Being able to make...

OH YEAH!!! Another great day to be Forging!

I can remember an Easter weekend when we were stationed in Blytheville, AR., at the old Eaker AFB..... we got 3" of snow, and temps in the 20s.... the whole place literally shut down! For two days before "the storm" hit, all the grocery stores and hardware stores had "runs" and nothing but...

How do I sand this scale flat?

Just for future reference..... typically the reason woods warp like that when stabilized, is because the moisture level was too high going into the stabilizing process. (need to let the wood dry more)

OH YEAH!!! Another great day to be Forging!

Well NUTS! So much for using Orange Crush! Even with the block heater plugged in, the Kubota diesel won't start. May have some frozen fuel, and I suspect the hydraulic fluid is too thick to flow anyway. Will give it another try when the temp gets to -10 or so. :)

OH YEAH!!! Another great day to be Forging!

And the trend continues.... I purchased a new indoor/outdoor thermometer this year...... I just checked it's manual.... it only reads to -22F..... wonder why they chose that number for a lower limit??

    Belt slides on platen

I suspect the motor alignment was/is the main issue. I also think you will realize better tracking with ONLY a crowned wheel on what you referred to as the "tracking wheel" (either "tracking" or "idler" are terms used to describe that specific wheel). ;)

OH YEAH!!! Another great day to be Forging!

It's about 4pm, which is normally our "hottest" part of the day, and it's a balmy -10F! I played ball a little bit with Blade (my Lab), but had to stop when the ball was freezing to his lips! :)

US SOCKET TRAPDOOR BAYONET MODEL 1873?

I'm in no way trying to be rude or disrespectful, just information for you. I doubt you'll get much information or interaction posting factory made knives/edge items. Most folks here are custom knifemakers, and while we might know some things about factory/production knives, it's not that...

Has anyone tried to make San-Mai with 316 stainless?

I've done it. It works, but has more quirks to making it work then 410 or 416. By "quirks", I mean it has a much more narrow forging range, and for me it has/had ZERO tolerance for trying to draw it out after getting it welded. Frankly, I have a bunch of it around too....and rather then put...

    Fill in the Crack!

Overall, I think you took the best approach. There are so many unknowns when trying to use heat to remove a handle.....that the chances of catastrophic mistake are very real. I've always found it MUCH easier and simpler to remove scales versus hidden tang "blocks". In the case of...

    Belt slides on platen

Gene makes a good point with having multiple crowned wheels on the same grinder/machine. UNLESS the crowned wheels are PERFECTLY aligned/squared to each other, they will fight against each other.... one will try to "pull" the belt one way, and the other will try to pull another. Usually the...

    Fill in the Crack!

I vote for, and strongly advise you follow John's #1 answer. Knock it off and redo. I've been in your shoes, and I suspect we all have..... you don't want to "wreck all that work". But here's the rub.... knowing you CAN do it right, and not, will haunt you in one way or another. Making it...

    Belt slides on platen

Usually those spring cylinders have a rating printed on them. I've tried them everywhere from 15-90lbs. Most commonly I see 30-50lb rated ones on grinders. I doubt you'll exceed the belts pressure/tension limits. If the belt is diving off both directions when pressure is applied...
