    First welding machine

I hadn't welded since junior high Industrial Arts class, but a few years ago bough a Lincoln Handy Mig which is there entry level beginner wire feed welder. It can use flux core wire for simplicity or use solid wire with Argon. So far I have only used the flux core wire mode but it has done...

    Florida hurricane...

Same here. Where I live I'm often stumbling around in thick slippery underbrush and salal, because that's where the trees seem to land. I'm also usually walking on all the limbs that were just cut off. It's easy enough to flick the brake forward with my left forearm/wrist which gives me an...

    Old hog hunt video

Looks like a lot of fun! Do these types of hogs make decent pork for eating? Or is it basically just vermin / pest eradication? Andy

    Son made his first knife

Looks great, especially for his first attempt at making a knife. Much better than my first or even fourth attempts!

    ULU for my brother

Nice looking ulu! For the glue issue... I've had decent luck by temporarily locating the scales to the blade, then using a Q-Tip with Vaseline to coat the junction where the scales meet the ricasso. Then carefully remove the scales so as not to smear the Vaseline and proceed with the glue up...

    Budget belt grinder

While we're on the topic of buying equipment to get into the game, the biggest boost I made to my novice knife-making was to get a porta-band (Milwaukee) and Swag table. Having a band saw that can cut metal is a game changer. Before getting it I was roughing out my blade peripheries using...

    Budget belt grinder

I'm strictly bush league but I have this same Grizzly grinder and have managed to built a few decent knives so far with it. I did bolster up the platen by welding some gussets to the L shape to eliminate flex, and I bonded a leather strip to the platen as well. It works "okay" and it allowed...

    Epoxi

I can't say for sure but I think micro-balloons are usually hollow phenolic added to reduce weight, often in aerospace applications. I think for toughening they use a solid elastomeric (i.e. "rubbery" material) since the goal is just to act as a crack stopper. Though logic would say that the...

    Epoxi

yep.. it has elastomeric micro-spheres added as tougheners, giving it a two phase morphology. The little spheres act as microscopic crack arrestors, making it extremely tough and fatigue resistant.

    Epoxi

I really like the BladeBond I got from USA Knifemaker. But a few years ago I built a wooden boat and used a ton of a product called GelMagic epoxy adhesive from System 3, and it was an amazingly tough adhesive at least on wood to wood joints. I always have wondered how it would perform in a...

    Handles coming apart

You might not be able to tell without puling the handle material off, but my first question was whether the epoxy is disbonding from the metal or the wood. If it's predominately releasing from either one or the other that could indicate contamination or poor surface prep on the material...

    Giraffe bone

I hope so too. I'm not sure why I had it in my head that he hunted with an AR platform, I thought I saw one used in his pics. But I looked back at his posts and all I see is more traditional rifles, and some cool ones that he built. He did mention using 6.5 Grendel as a hunting round so...

    Giraffe bone

Does anyone know where he went? I remember him posting a lot of cool hunting trip reports with pictures and wondered if the NZ sudden ban on AR-15 platforms was going to impact him. -andy

    I have to brag!

Really nice looking work... A lot nicer than what I can turn out, (and I've got a few more than 2 blades under my belt...) Congratulations to both of you! Nice looking profile as well... is it a design he drew up himself? - andy

New to the forum and a novice considering many/all posters here and Damascus blade question

Yes... No matter how cheap the steel is I cannot imagine it transferring enough loose metal fines onto the food to cause sparking in a microwave.
