A bit of a rant about user names on the forums

In my case and I'm certain in others, our name itself is the problem. Go to any website or forum anywhere and try to open an account with a name like Bill Smith or Chris Jones. Most times I just use an old gamer handle I used over 15 years ago (Salolan, no meaning behind it, random name...

How long you been making knives?

I'm just a new kid from the sounds of things. I made my first knife shaped object in the fall of 2012. Chris

    scotchbrite vs cork?

I would recommend the fine to very fine, the maroon medium grit is actually aggressive enough you can remove material with it. If you intend on hand sanding after I wouldn't bother with a scotchbrite. If I am going to hand sand I finish with a cork, if I am leaving a machine finish, I'll likely...

2016 ICCE show in Kansas City

I plan on going Friday as well. I had planned on going Saturday and spending all day like I did last year but my daughters' 4-H club planned a Worlds of Fun trip and I wouldn't be the most popular dad not going. So Friday it is! Calvin, might I be able to snag one of those passes as well? Chris

    Building a media tumbler.

I converted an old wood lathe I wasn't using into a rotary tumbler. Geared it way down and chucked a 1" dowel rod in the spindles and used that for a drive wheel to spin a 4" PVC container filled with HF media. Sacrificed a cheap skateboard for the idler wheels. Chris

    Processing hedge

As firewood, I call it hedge as well as that is more local, but for the knives I tend to call it Osage Orange. Justin, there was a LOT of waste in how I did it. But then again I have access to about 40 acres of the stuff growing like a weed. One can hardly tell I've been cutting firewood on the...

    Processing hedge

Justin, depending on how long they have been dead, they may be harder than you are bargaining for. By no way am I an expert, but here is how I handled the Osage Orange I have processed. Most everything I have used has been offcuts, forks and knots from cutting firewood. I toss it all in a pile...

    Stainless for Slipjoint springs?

Ken, I asked Brad if that would be the range he recommended for a backspring in AEB-L and he said it was. Chris

    Stainless for Slipjoint springs?

I have yet to finish them, but I have 6 slipjoints and backsprings in AEB-L heat treated and ready to start final shaping and assembly. Not sure who you are using for HT, but I used Peters. I talked to Brad before I sent them off to check on the exact things you are questioning. Everything was...

What's going on in your shop?

Shop time has been limited so far this year to say the least. Here is finished knife #3 this year. 1080, tapered tang with SS pins and quite possibly the coolest Osage Orange scales I've seen. paired with my 3rd ever fully lined sheath Thanks for looking, Chris

Slip Joint Folder WIP- First time for me, Help needed

Daniel, as Don said, your tang is still too long. The spring should be in the same position in all 3 stop positions. It does raise slightly as you transition the blade from 1 position to another. Go back and look at Sticks' picture in post #2 of this thread. You see how he has a circle scribed...

    Flattery

A little over a month ago, a friend of mine asked to buy a pattern for my version of the pancake sheaths I've been making the last year. I sent him a copy but declined his request to purchase it as I don't feel it is mine to sell. Dave Ferry, and many others had perfected this style long before...

What are you going to make in 2016?

I'm planning to do some more slipjoint folders as well as a lockback or 2. I haven't given much thought to doing frame or liner locks. I also would really like to start doing some forging this year. The plan is also to requisition the funds this spring and get a KMG. I would have had one already...
