    pivot pin tapered???

I use to load my pin material in an old drill press and hold a file at an angle as the material was spinning. It gave a nice medium length taper. The you can clean it up with a bit of 220 grit. Johnny Roberts

    slip joint kit problem

For me, setting the proper amount of tension depends on the size of the knife, blade and the thickness and shape of the spring. I have a piece of precision ground steel that I put holes in at the proper spacing to allow me to get a feel for how much resistance the spring is going to have. When I...

    Rise and Fall Indicator Issues

I only have two pins on my RFI. One for the pivot and one for the center of the spring. I push up on the back of the spring to apply pressure at the tang. As Bruce mentioned above, I use a drill bit shank as my pivots. Don Robinson makes a really nice RFI and the one I built is ver...

Is 40 Rc WAY too low for a slip joint spring?

JC, 40 is probably a bit low. It is important for the spring to be hard enough to withstand the wear that will come from the much harder blade tang. I used to shoot for around 45 Rc but after speaking with some slipjoint guys that know a helluva lot more than I do, I am now making mine a...

Brand new book on building slipjoints

The book is full of great information that is laid out in a clear linear path. There are lots of different ways to make knives but it is fantastic to see how someone else does it. Setting spring tension can be tricky. I look forward to trying your technique. Also, many thanks for your mill...

    A new Folder for ME

I like it a lot. I doubt you are going to have that in your pocket for very long. The slight contrast between the liner steel and the back spacer is nice and the slim profile makes it look like it will ride comfortably. Nice Job. Very impressive.
