    new h/t oven question

Disclaimer: I am a rookie so anything I say is questionable. I do not put my blade in when I turn the over on. I put it in after the over has reached temperature. If I put the blade in there when the over is at room temp, the blade will remain hot for a long time as it gets up to temp (I have...

What's going on in your shop?

Personally I prefer the polished profile you have there rather than the dark, re-etched profile. I think it looks better but that is just me. Beautiful little guy! Thumbs up!

What's going on in your shop?

Thank you, MTBob! Have at it Sir! But it is not really my file pattern. I have seen this on other knives and on YouTube tutorials.

    First leather sheath.

Outstanding work on the sheaths! If those are your firsts then you are gifted in this area. I can't wait to see the sheath you'll make in a year if you keep at it.

    Can Leather Be Sanded

Depends on the type of leather. Most leathers will not survive deep scratches on the good side and go back to looking like they did before the scratch took place. Mileage may vary. Good luck

    Can Leather Be Sanded

i sand the edge of my sheaths to 800 before hitting them with the wooden wax wheel. They end up pretty smooth. But this really depends on what you are trying to do. .... what are you trying to do?

Normalization, Grain Refinement, Austenitizing, Tempering… Warps and Timing Questions

From what I have been able to formulate the overall high-level heat treat process goes something like this: Normalize – releases stress and re-grows new grain structure from a known point. Grain Refinement – Reduces the grain size. Produces smaller and more evenly distributed carbides...

2nd attempt at sheath making-Horizontal sheath

That is how we all start my friend. Repetition will bring improvements. You are already ahead of the rest of the world who never made leather work. Now it is just a matter of how good do you want to get? The more you make something, the better you get at making it. Simple as that. Look at your...

    Christmas Hamon!

Alright folks, here is a quick update on my status. I busted up one of my fingers pretty bad on the table saw while trying to cut up handle material. So, have not gotten anything done in the past three weeks since then. Luckily it was just a laceration and no bone/nerve damage so I should be...

File work on spine of knife. Before or after heat treat?

I know at first it would seem logical to say "Of course you want to do this before heat treating!" But I am worried that all that file work may give the blade a reason to warp during heat treat. What are your thoughts on this? If you do file work, do you do it before or after heat treat...

Waterjet? Plasma? Laser? What is best to cut out blade blanks?

Good morning folks. Hope everyone is having a good day. Here is the deal: I have had more than one experienced knife maker tell me that laser or plasma cutting are not good for knife making. They tell me that waterjet is the way to go. Question is simple. How do you feel about this? Is it...

    Christmas Hamon!

Thank you very much Andy! I am completely addicted to the hamon and the knife gods have been kind to me so far. From what I have been able to gather W-2 is the bee's knees for Hamons. Where did you order your W-2 from? I got mine from NJSB. Since I am a noobie, I am going in slow to the etch...

    Christmas Hamon!

I am keeping the speed pretty low on the grinder and taking my time. This seems to help. The loupe headgear helps a lot with this as well.
