At what point should you start?

Byron, being in Mississippi, presents no problem with shipping, but Hellgap you being in Canada would involve international shipping so that could be a major factor in your case, although it would still probably be worth your time to investigate. I use and recommend Wickett & Craig Tannery...

At what point should you start?

Byron, I think it would be a good idea if you either visit a professional sheath maker or at least spend a few bucks on the phone with one. You will get all the questions you have now answered and probably some good advice and helpful hints on top of that. A couple of things I believe: If...

    Snake skin sheaths

I'm really not that familiar with Cobra, but it appears from your photos, that the inlay portion showing is all belly. Who ever skinned that Cobra went about it backwards as the slit should have been up the belly and not up the back where the more decorative scales are. Paul

    Raw Hide sheath WIP

Hola Horacio! Otro vez, Muchicimas gracias. It is always a pleasure to see the the creation of my sheath and the braid work on the handle of the knife. Pictured below is how it looks today. I just took it out of its display case a few moments ago for the photos below. Horacio is a true...

    Question for the sheath makers

My sheath is finished with neatsfoot oil, then a sealer and then a top sealer ( lacquer based). When the sheath is used enough to wear off the top coat, then You could apply a very light coat of neatsfoot oil, or you could use any of the commercial applications such as Lexol, and a host of...

    Getting dye off blade

Allistair. Acetone will probably do the job. I know for sure it will remove dye from my hands! If the knife has a hand sanded finish then surely the dye made its way into the micro scratches of the finish so a little "soaking" might have to take place. Good luck!. Paul

    2 more for Wade

Beautiful work, John. That snake skin is not just snake skin. It's Rattle Snake skin. In fact it's Massasauga Rattle Snake skin (Prairie Rattler). Kind of hard to come by those skins. Paul

    Sub Hilt fund raiser WIP

Bruce, thank you again for allowing me to share in the pleasure of this effort. I've made literally thousands of sheaths, but none more important or satisfying than this one and the cause it represented. Paul

    David Lisch Feather Pattern S-Guard

I just put the knife down to make this post. I got to handle it even before Jon! It is a beautiful job all the way around, and thats the second time ever I've seen a piece of "fire pit" ivory and it happened to be walrus also. Who had it? Why DH III, of course. (edited to add here: I think...

    Bowies!!!

Gents, (and Ladies too if there be any in attendance), I have had both these knives up close and personal and they are NICE!! I am amazed that they came back from Belgium. If you are looking for something this size, I repeat, these are NICE! Paul

    Finishing questions.

I agree with Dwayne, it looks like hot stuffed leather and any finish you put on it will do just that ...STAY ON IT...it will not penetrate and the other finishes such as TanKote etc that should kind of stay on top...WON'T, they will rub off. Next time you buy leather try two things: 1...

new (but used) sheath for Chalrie's knife

Yep! That belt loop kind of reminds me of the Ancient One from Blairsville. Good looking sheath and it looks like it can stand up to a good many hunts. Paul

    Sheath Accessory

Try Martin Swinkels. He's a gold member over on blade forums and may post on this forum as well. He works with Kydex and Leather together, and may be just what you are looking for. That's the good news. The bad news is he is located, I believe, in the Netherlands, so transit time will be a...

    Two sheaths more

Pepin, mi amigo, the carving is very well done. Do I see a touch of a Robert Baird tool gently lifting the petals on the flower? Please keep posting your work. It is beautiful. Buena suerte! Paul

    Some recent sheaths

Thanks for posting the pictures. I had lost the first two in a inadvertent delete on my then new IMac...and now I've got them back! I think the placement and style of retention strap over came my butt heavy concerns, and I am very pleased that you like the sheath. Paul
