    Scroll cutting doodle

Your uncle's work reminds me of Ray Pohja, and Ben Veach. Several oldtimers I've known had the talent to pull that off.....sadly I never have. Don't see too many of those hollow ground blades used any more. They used to be really popular. Paul

    Sewing Machine suggestion

Well, if you have $2000 then you are just about there on the Artisan 3000. The 3000 is one of a group of "almost the same" machines which includes Cobra, Cowboy etc. etc. Since they all have a pretty common heritage, (Juki) then it boils down to customer service and technical back up. That...

    Question for Paul Long

Steve, the softer deer skin will seem to grip the knife. It will normally loosen up considerably with use. BUT........ the problem you describe could also be that the sheath is just a little bit small, or that you got hold of a piece of thick deer skin. If it is just very snug then break in...

    Triangular basket weave.

Hey Cliff that line up recipe works just right for the first line which is a great improvement for me, but as you say you still have to line up each stroke very carefully after that. Thanks for your help, much appreciated. Paul

    Triangular basket weave.

Thanks Ernie, if it was any of the regular basket weave stamps you saw demonstrated then the diagonal line is the very best method I've ever used and it is demonstrated on my "Basic pouch Sheaths" DVD. Now, I'd still like to have someone teach me to use the tri-weave. Paul

    Triangular basket weave.

Ernie, I would be very interested in an elaboration and perhaps a picture or two of this procedure. I've been at this game a long time and I would welcome some tutoring on the use of that darned stamp. It is one I seldom use because it is so difficult to get right. I spent the high dollar...

    Horsemans sheath.

Nice, Robin, that knife kind of reminds me of "The Last Dogman" Bowie from the movie "The Last Of The Dogmen" starring Tom Berringer. Sheath looks really nice for the rig. Paul

    Wing divider

Chef, those Osborne tools you provided a link for appear to be the same end use as an adjustable stitch groover, which I do not like. I have a set of dedicated Tandy stitch groovers set at 1/4", 5/16" and a free hand groover. These are just the "cheap ?" version they sell for around $10 now...

    Wing divider

Good choice on both counts. If you are like me you will wind up over the years with five or six from the smallest to the largest, but this is a good place to start. Paul

Problem sewing with the Tippmann Boss

You will eliminate problems by making a paper pattern and preplanning the location of loops etc. Generally you will need a MINIMUM of 3/4" clearance from the loop to the edge of the sheath. More is even better. Also you should skive the tip of the loop to about 50% thickness to eliminate so...

How many sheaths did you have to make...

Colin, My later hand stitching (which ended about 14 years ago) finally looked as good as machine stitching with regard to spacing, tension etc. Machine stitching certainly was a huge factor in my production capabilities, as it now takes about 15 to 20 seconds to stitch the edge of a sheath...

How many sheaths did you have to make...

Well, I'm at about 3000 sheaths now and I still, as John pointed out, look at each one with a critical eye and think I might have done this or that differently or better and it is this process that has evolved my sheaths to the point they are at today. This is still not the end. That...

    Cleaver Sheath

Chef, it looks like you are on your way! It's time now to start to refine your techniques and quality....a little improvement with each project. Notice the circular impressions in the photo. They appear to have been made with a smooth face hammer. This may have been done when the leather was...

    Boning?

Chef, "boning" is pretty much the same thing as wet molding. The original boning tools as I understand were made from Whale rib bones, slightly curved and domed and sort of shuttle shaped. I happen to have one made from the front leg bone of a White Tail Deer. With the object within the sheath...

    .....and Another Holster.

A very good friend gave me this little 1978 Ruger Bearcat a short while ago and I finally got around to making a simple little holster for it. Kid Terico's thread reminded me so I thought I'd show it also. Along with it is a 9 1/2" full size Ruger .22 for my son. Paul
