    Botched sheath

A couple of facts first. The cheapest leather you can find will turn out to be the most expensive leather you ever use. Until you gain some personal experience in selecting your leather you will be at the mercy of one of the Tandy employees. Always request USA tanned leather and then check...

    Botched sheath

Belly leather??? That is nearly always a problem with stamping or carving. Very hard to get soft belly leather to case (Wet) evenly. it will nearly always stretch in odd direction when stamped with geometric pattern tools. Basket weave seems easy but it is one of the most demanding tools in...

looking better & a few questions!??

Before you get too excited about wet forming, edge finishing, etc. you had better stitch belt loop on if it is going to have one. Yes, if you really wet the sheath and press hard to mold it, the stamping will fade considerably. You don't "push" the leather around without affecting the...

    Leather Snaps Question

They do exist, in about line 24 size. Automotive and boat industry use. They are used to batten down boat covers, tonneau covers, convertible boots etc.....and they most nearly all come with sheet metal screws on the male side. I really don't see how they could apply to leather work. If the...

my take on a leather pancake

Franklin, if you're going to make more pancake style you might want to invest in a "bag punch" or some people call them slot punches.. They come in various sizes from 1/4" all the way up to 2 1/2". Not really cheap, but really handy time savers and they do a really neat looking slot. Paul

    Question: Stacked leather knife handle

I have never made one, Mark, but sole bends are probably the most dense leather. It takes a darn good knife just to cut the stuff....it's tough! Good select veg. tan could fill the bill as well and is probably what is used for most applications. Paul

    Indian Knife & Sheath

Well, I guess you took John Cohea's DVD and put it to the best and highest use. Both knife and sheath represent the highest degree of professionalism in execution. Put simply, you did good! I know John would echo my comments. Paul

    Fighter sheath leather

Mark, it did finish out beautifully. I feel fairly confident in predicting that it is not a case of "if" it fails, but "when" will it fail, because that's going to be a near 100% sure thing. You do have me wondering if a product like JB Weld might pull this little stunt off, though. The...

    What Happen?

Bingo! You win. Clay hardened heat treat. You got a hamon....not many can do that! Leather does not like ovens, period.

    Leather bowie sheath

Nice work, Mark. A very smart man told me long ago...."If you start with crap there is a very good chance you will end up with crap". Conversely, if you start with good quality, the results have every chance of being good quality in the end. Mark has proved this point. The cheapest materials...

    Double carry

Nice job, Travis. I like the style you have used here, as I'm not a big fan of "Piggy Back" dual sheaths. As you have already found out the center welt and the attachment of the belt loop work against each other. The last one, I did I designed with a spilt double belt loop so I could get it...

    Leather Finishing - Oiling

The following are MY opinions based on MY experience, and are not intended to agree or disagree with anyone else's methods. 1. I don't ever dip a sheath in anything. Apply Pure Neatsfoot oil sparingly, and since I fully line everything it is exterior only. Too much oil will clog the leather...

    Sheath Lining Question

It is always my pleasure to help out if I can. Ausbrooks, your tooling and swivel knife lines are really first rate. That suede lined sheath doesn't look bad (bulky) to a great degree at all in the photo. Keep up the good work. Paul

OK Leather guru's, here's what I'm wanting to do....

Rex, the combined weights of 4/5 front and 4/5 back and Ostrich is the middle might work out just fine. I've never tired it, but it does sound like it might work okay There is a link there at the bottom of all my posts (chriscrawfordknives.com). He is the one selling the DVDs, and I believe...
