    W's/feather question

Hi Bruce, I just got back from a few days at the Clow's, where I made my first Damascus billets, got some good work done on a few existing projects, fell in love with the 14inch wheel, and generally has a great time. Making some feather pattern was discussed and attempted with no success...

Can anyone dress or resurface my 10 in wheels?

I have 2 10in wheels and both have uneven edges. I assume it's possible to dress them and make them nice and square again. Anyone do this or know who does? It has to be cheaper than buying new ones...

How many random layers to simulate wootz?

The plan is to be at Jim's tomorrow and Monday. I can't imagine Jim not being happy to have you, and I know for sure that I would, especially after missing you both in San Antonio and at the Alberta hammer-in. If that's too short of a planning lead time, I'd for sure be happy to come out again...

How many random layers to simulate wootz?

Fair enough Ed. I should have known that the answer would be "it depends." I'll be at Jim Clow's place, and we may not even get to this project. At this point it's just an idea I'm kicking around in my head for an historically accurate Persian kard or Indo-Persian khanjar. I'll make them...

How many random layers to simulate wootz?

So this is a bit of a "random" post. I'll likely spend some days this weekend making my first damascus billets with some folks who actually know what they're doing in that realm. I have a thing for Middle Eastern style blades and would like to make a few that are historically accurate, mostly. I...

Who Makes Hydraulic Presses for sale?

Uncle Al's makes them. I've not used one, but Kevin the Professor has one from there, I believe. I scoped them out a little, and they look to fit the bill pretty well. I am very interested in the outcome of this thread...

    From Round Stock to Knife

If it's 1084 it WILL be great for taking and holding an edge. I have the ability to heat treat almost anything with my equipment, but I still use 1080 or 1084 for most of my knives. I'd actually love to have some 1084 round for making integrals. That was a GREAT find!

Do I need to heat treat a wedding cake knife?

In fairness, a girl capable of dispatching ninjas with a cake knife probably has a better knife (or several) stashed elsewhere on her person for just such situations. I agree, however, that if I were to put my name on a knife and let the public see it, it would be heat treated.

antler scales on a full tang knife

Make sure you take the bulk of the material off the back side before you shape anything. You want them to be at about the right thickness before gluing and pinning, or else you'll end up grinding off all the texture. That's probably pretty obvious, but nobody else said it.

    Cork handle/floating fish knife

I like it! I think there could really be a market for something like this. One of my very first knives (made when I was about 12) had a hollow walnut handle and a very light blade and was designed to float for the same reason. It totally sucked as far as fit and finish, but it did what it...

    DIY no-weld Belt, buff, disc

Laurence, I thought the exact same thing. If one was to use a file guide (which one WILL, eventually), the current setup wouldn't really allow it. Looks like a great grinder all around, and it looks like our buddy exitium has both the wherewithal and machinery to modify as and when needed.
