Why I quit doing my own stainless: the MATH

I agree about differentially hardened blades. I mentioned previously that the flexibility to differentially harden was one of the reasons I have (or had and will have again) an oven, but the reason I have a hardness tester has nothing to do with that, for precisely the reasons John mentions...

Why I quit doing my own stainless: the MATH

I hear what you're saying John. I used the world "help" intentionally. There is no perfect test that incompasses everything that makes up a good blade, but I can tell that if my 1095 comes out of the quench at 55HRC, something is wrong. My brother makes another good point, which is part of...

At long last, back in the shop

It was fun, Canada. We had some great times together and made some great memories, but it was time to go back to the one who has loved me longest and best. I landed back in my home state in mid-April, and in the six weeks since then I’ve installed 60 feet of brick sidewalk, built and planted a...

Why I quit doing my own stainless: the MATH

I should add that I still do my own carbon blades because I like to do it. I like that I can edge quench or clay quench. I like that it's DONE fast, without an hour and a half of ramp time for the kiln and then cryo after. I like to play with hamons and to try new alloys, just because I can...

Why I quit doing my own stainless: the MATH

I agree Ed. A recent example: I made a big spreadsheet model a while back that calculated the make vs. buy margins for sheaths (that's the nerd alarm you hear in the background), and I proved to myself that under no circumstances and at no price point is it ever cost effective to make my own...

Why I quit doing my own stainless: the MATH

I get that you want to do your own HT. You have a kiln, so you can easily do what's necessary. Maybe you cryo too to get that last bit of retained austenite. Good on you, but is it worth it? The MATH: DIY: $1.50 per blade for foil $.10 for kiln electricity (estimated) $10 for time spent...

    the going rate for anvils?

I enjoyed my brief time with that anvil, and with that dog.

    Perplexed!!!! Flaw??

What grit was it at when you did your heat treat? I've seen decarb from the bottom of belt scratches show up in an etch when it was otherwise invisible and all actual scratches were polished out. More with damascus than with attempts at hamon, but I still bet that's what it is.

    the going rate for anvils?

The PW has already been claimed by another local KD member. If it falls through, I'll let you know.

    Forge Build Help Please

Only thing I'd add is that the burners on the Zoellerforge site are pretty primitive as venturi burners go. They work fine, but you can make much more efficient ones that burn hotter for about the same cost. Somewhere embedded in that site Larry says some things about this. Google "mikey...

    Forge Build Help Please

For something that small, one venturi can weld if it's the right burner. If you're building your own burners, it's hard to imagine not needing "]THIS BOOK. For burner location, about 30% of the distance from the back seems standard, and at an angle tangent to the cylinder, pointed slightly...

Made and stole in short order .

Nicest knife I ever made (with $380 of engraving!) disappeared in exactly the same way. I ended up getting the insurance I'd paid for, but they wouldn't let me cover the whole value, so I still lost $200 on the deal. I haven't used USPS since.

    Makers mark opinion

My wife (who designs logos and websites and print advertising for a living) and I had the same discussion last week about whether the MM should be/match any other branding materials (fonts, logos, websites, etc.). It came up because I was finally ordering some new MM stencils from IMG based on...

    Makers mark opinion

#2 is best, with #1 a close second. #3 is fine too, but I don't care for #4 (we know you do knives already if the mark is on a knife!). The purpose of the maker's mark is to provide a random person who encounters it with enough info to find you. Anything else (IMHO) is superfluous. This is not...

    the going rate for anvils?

I'm about to acquire a 120# Fisher in good condition, and will thus be selling my 104# Peter Wright, also in good condition (don't have room for both). I know what I see on the local Craigslist price wise, but I'd like some feeback about what kind of pricing is fair to myself and the potential...

Forge building ?: 2 layers of 1" wool or 1 layer of 2"

Title says it all, really. I'm fortunate to live in Houston where, apparently 8# 2300deg (or 2600) inswool can be had for ridiculously low prices and no shipping. I have the option of getting 1" or 2" wool, and 2300 or 2600deg. The cost between them all is negligible, so it's a question of what...

    Kirinite MOP Dagger

Greg is right on. This thing is more impressive every time I look at it, noted caveats aside.
