    I just have a large nail with a large head on it ,I wrap a strip of craft felt down the length if the nail and around the end of the head and hold it in place with a small clothes pin.I use a clean spot of felt for each etch until I've used up all the felt then cut a new strip .

    I have a homemade etcher made from a old battery charger,I sand to at least 400 grit,then clean with alchohol, tape my stencil down with scotch tape,I load the felt on my wand with a mixture of salt and vinegar and etch holding the pad down for 3 to 5 sec and repeat until I'm satisfied...

    Looking good Brother, one thing that can help with the soldering is to use a grafit pencil on the parts of your guard and recoso you dont want the solder to stick to. Makes clean up much easier.

    Missed on the heat treat

    How big is your quench tank,mine holds 5 gallons and I usually try and do about 4 blades at a time when using my oven.I do one then stir the oil wait a minute or so then do the next one.

    In the book A sure Defense,The Bowie knife in America you can find examples of knives with and without from the early 1830s so I'm sure they had them prior to this if one hade the steel to do it.
