Mark, The 3 screws really help hold the knife together at the rear thus having no gaps. They also help evenly distribute the tension that the spring exerts.

Nice work Clint. I like the centered pattern, it would be great for a dagger blade. If you want a tighter weave just stack the pieces on top of themselves in alternating patterns, kinda like the stack in the center of pictures 1 and 2.
