    Warped Scales

Glad you inquired, thanks. The more info the better. I fully understand the movement/warping regarding unstabilized wood, but stabilized wood, well, it is stabilized. Perhaps when roughing the surface the material takes on the attributes of raw wood and the epoxy can migrate into the surface...

    Cutting in finger holes

I have an auxiliary table made of thick mdf that is slightly larger than my drill press' table that I can attach my vise, etc., to, then move where I want the item and clamp the mdf to the drill's original table. Works for me most times without even clamping the aux. table to the press.

Which epoxy manufacturer? By chance, did you inquire about stabilized materials?

What's going on in your shop?

I like those a bunch Tim. What steel and dimensions, etc.? How do you get the plungeless grind so smooth? Scott

    Warped Scales

tkroenlein, that was an interesting read, thank you. Another thought came to mind while reading. The angle iron that I clamped to was most assuredly colder than anything else and perhaps that effected the epoxy crosslinking on the G10 side of the film. Drawing the exothermic heat out more so on...

    Warped Scales

Hey Bill. Yep many ways to foul up and I'm doing my darnedest to check them off as I go. I remember the Bi-metallic coils and all the carb adjustments just to keep the engine from flooding. Preferred my pull choke ! From what West Systems chem engineer said, there are no solvents to migrate...

    Warped Scales

Thank you Mark for your reply. I appreciate every little tidbit along this journey. What you have written makes sense and I understand it. But, in this case I only hand sanded the materials to roughen them as they were acceptably flat. In the past I have glued up sets to choose from, before...

    Warped Scales

I don't think I'll try any hidden pins - too fiddly for my hands. But, I reckon I could add another Corby in the center. Not sure if I will like the looks on this particular knife though. Drilling 61 HRC steel is not my favorite and with the lightening holes already done, I'm unsure that I'll...

    Warped Scales

True what you said John. They're bookmatched, but I did pick the most awesome sides.. I'm going to work on the overbending for now and see if that helps. If not, then I will check out whether the Corbys will pull them flat enough (using clamps, not the actual rivets.). I'm considering thinning...

    Warped Scales

To you all. Thanks for all the input! The different rates of expansion - magic! Exothermic heat during cure ! Doing the clamping/heat/over-bending as I type. Continuing that is. I just don't want to crack them. I believe I will do my glue ups at one time from here on out., as per Mr. Wilson...

    Warped Scales

That makes sense. And yes, that is a good question. I feel pretty confident, when all is said and done, that the epoxy will adhere the scales/liners to the balde, but I would like to know the for sure reason for the warp... Could it be that the GFlex is not the epoxy to use for this part of...

    Warped Scales

Both good suggestion to try in the future. These scales have bright yellow G10 liners, so no colorant that I have will work. When I purchased these scales they were already 5/16 thick and extremely flat, so they only needed roughing up. Ideas to salvage them?

    Warped Scales

Good day all. Needing some input on the why it happens and potential fixes. I have well stabilized scales of various woods, burls, some dyed, some not. I flatten them on a flat plate, till I cannot see between them, using 60 grit paper finishing with figure eight motions. I did not use...

    AEB-L Etch

Hi Fred, yes the AEB-L is stainless. (Professionally HT'd and with cryo to 61 HRC) The FC is working, although it is not quick. But, as the picture shows I am getting some strange patterns.

    AEB-L Etch

Good day all. I'm hoping to get some info/insight about this etch on some AEB-L. HRC 61 .070 thick Sanded to 400 grit, not cleaned with anything, just wiped clean with paper towel. Etched in FC at 60 degrees for 30 minutes Rubbed down with steel wool lightly, although the pattern was pre-wipe...
