    a few knives and sheaths...

So I finished up a few knives and finally got to make sheathes for them on my new Cowboy 4500 sewing machine. these are my first {real} sheathes off that machine, I got to say I love this machine but man...it takes some practice running this thing. I'm getting better with it now that I've got a...

    Leather Question - Color Transfer

I've had that happen before years ago, what I do now is my finish goes like this, after the the sheath is done I give it a brisk rub down with an old tee shirt...you'd be surprised at all the coloring on that cloth afterwards. I then use an air brush and usually give three light coats of Resenol...

The Most Dangerous Thing in MY Shop...

Yea that foil has got me more than a few times. I’ve always said the most dangerous machine in the shop is what’s ever running at the time but I’d have to say my wood cutting band saw is at the top of the list, like all machines you have to have all your concentration on what your doing in front...

    New machine...

Well, I just ordered the one that was available from Sheffields. it's my third choice but the only one I can find available anywhere short of making one. and I think trying to make a good oblong punch would just lead to frustration so I'll see how this one will work.

    New machine...

Yea I saw that one, I posted a question to the seller…do you think you should be hit over the head and have it taken from you? Amazon didn’t post it, so today I asked them…Are you a scammer? Amazon wouldn’t post that either. I’ve searched every leather supplier on the web. Nobody has them...

    New machine...

So after some practice on this machine I did my first sheath yesterday, and my first pancake style, for a small skinner I recently finished. I think it came out ok except for a few small issues, a couple stitches in the top left corner look a little wonky...I need to get better at turning on...

    New machine...

It is John, I got a pile started in my shop of thread cuttings and stitched up scrap. I can't seem to stop playing with this thing. one thing I have figured out is if anything messes up, it's the operator not the machine. :D

    Gut Hook Skinner

On your next one you should make the hook a little wider CD. for anything other than thin skinned whitetails that hook might not cut too good. especially hogs that are all mucked up with dirt and mud. I use a round file to start it but then go back with diamond files to thin out the radius and...

    New machine...

The backside looks great to, the stitch is pulled tight just below flush with the leather. When I ordered the machine I told the dealer what leather weights I would normally be using and he preset the tensions and a sample piece of stitched leather came with the machine…still attached to the...

    New machine...

Yep, it's 3/4". it can sew thicker but I'm satisfied with that sample there ha ha. I don't plan on sewing at least anything thicker than that. I think I could fit about a full inch under the needle though. I'm using a #25 needle and 277 thread.

What's going on in your shop?

I've been practicing on my new sewing machine on all sorts of scrap leather glued up. I'm really liking this thing and learning all different ways it can be set up in regards to speed, stitch length and other stuff. I should be doing some sheaths next week. I figured since the machine has a hour...
