A batch of kitchen knives for Lone Star Knife Expo

I haven't been around much lately. My wife and I had twin boys on March 9, to go with our 12 and 13 year old boys. Let's just say I haven't slept much, lol. Over the last four days, I've really hit it hard in the shop getting ready for the Lone Star Knife Expo in Dallas this weekend. Knowing...

If I only knew then....What I know now

If I'd have known how much immediate improvement in the quality of my product it would generate, I'd have gone variable speed much earlier. More than any other progress step regarding equipment, including jumping from a 2x42 to a step pulley 2x72, going to full variable speed made an immediate...

    W2 hunter

No coating other than the plum brown so far, Brad. I typically oil them up good initially, then a week or so later coat them in RenWax. Regarding the handle material, it's just run-of-the-mill sheep horn. I can't remember where I got it, but I think it came from K and G at ICCE last year.

    W2 hunter

I love it when I get an order for a knife and have just a few suggestions and a budget, so I'm free to make the knife however I like within boundaries. This one was an order like that. Ended up with a forged W2 hunter with a hamon, plum browned mild steel fittings with a few stainless...

    Forged 1084 Hunter for Lubbock

Here's a knife I just finished up for the show the Texas Knifemakers Guild is doing in Lubbock October 8/9. This one is forged from 1" X 1/4 1084 with a stainless guard and stabilized mesquite. Obvious Fisk/ABS style influences. Top one in this pic.

How long you been making knives?

June 2008, just passed 8 years. Built about 440 knives since then, part time. Hope to go full time after I retire in another 17 years, assuming I don't go insane first.

    Forged Bowie for Lubbock Show

KCorn (and any other Texas folks), the show is a joint effort between the Texas Knifemakers' Guild and the Silver Spur Gun Show at the civic center October 8/9. We're still taking table holders if you want to come down and try and sell a few, and of course you're welcome to come down and visit...

    Selling Your Knives

Anthony gave a good general overview, to flesh out what Calvin said. Harvey Dean told me at a show once, "never miss a chance to sell a knife." Period.... I've sold knives at church, baby showers, wedding showers, car dealerships, you name it. Always be ready to talk about your work, in...

Is a cheap mill better than no mill at all?

I have been looking for a medium sized milling machine. A harbor freight version of the Rong Fu 29 has turned up in my area. This is the same mill as the jet 18, and is one of the most common midsize mill designs. I hesitate because it's made by HF. The price is reasonable, fair but not...

A batch of kitchen knives, and some regular stuff.

Show went pretty well, sold four knives, including three out of that last picture.

    unknown steel heat treat

I'll throw out a guess that they're some kind of stainless alloy, probably on the cheaper side, like 420 or 440B. Try 1900 with a 30 minute soak, plate quench, then dry ice or liquid nitrogen, and I'd guess you'd get in the ballpark. Hardly anybody makes production blades like that in carbon...

    N690 for folder?

I can tell you this, based on my limited experience with VG-10 which is pretty much the same alloy... polish it as much as you can before heat treatment. It's very abrasion resistant, and a pain to hand sand.
