    Dayton. Show

Love the feather Fred. I looked at the seating chart for the show...looks like you'll have some good company. Jess Hoffman from the forums here on one side and Mastersmith Greg Gottschalk on the other! I'll swing by and introduce myself at some point :)

2019 KD Members Choice Awards - KITCHEN KNIVES

I wish I would have gotten a better picture of this pair, but had to get them out the door for a deadline.... A pair of matching 8 inch Chef's Knife made from low layer twisted W pattern steel...handle material is quilted maple.

    Bad forge weld?

Gene, did you use flux between the 2 cubes? I have seen where using flux causes that silver line between the welds.

    Thin forged Chefs knife

I've been to one of Nick Rossi's classes at a hammer-in. That man is crazy skilled. He makes everything look so simple lol! To answer your question...whenever I heat treat thin material I go straight from the quench to the plates as well.

    26C3

Cool, I followed the heat treat from that link I shared above. 1475, with a 10 min soak and quenched in fast oil. I have DT48 instad of parks 50. I like how hard this steel gets. I think I might order some more and see what kind of activity I get when shooting for a hamon. That's a nice looking...

    26C3

Ok so you motivated me to test this out. I had four 12 inch pieces 2 inches wide .040 thick. I knew these would suck to try and quench. I didn't get any pictures of them right out of the quench but they looked like a banana. I quenched then quickly straightened them by hand with gloves then put...

    26C3

I agree about the kitchen slicers...I've got some of the super thin pieces of 26C3 alpha sells. I think it was .40, I'm gonna try to heat treat them and keep them from warping!

    Spirit Of The Blade Show

Time wise I'm between both of you. I'm 2 1/2 hours away. You'll enjoy the show, there are plenty of makers there. Glad you could make it this year Jess...are you going to bring any wood with you...I actually should have a knife with some redwood burl I got from you a couple years ago on my...

    Spirit Of The Blade Show

Hey Fred, I'm glad you brought this up. This will be the 4th year of the show and it keeps getting better and better every year. I've had a table all 4 years and it's been great watching it grow. There is a wide selection of makers and vendors, we have at least 5 journeyman smiths, 1...

    26C3

I know Jelle Hazenberg uses it all the time on his chef knives and gets some really awesome hamon action. From some research I did on it, I ran across this article from Larrin Thomas. I guess it gets crazy hard, which would be awesome for kitchen knives, not so much for a bushcraft...

It was time to check grain

Honestly it looks a little course to me. The grain should look silky and smooth. I have to ask the normal questions when it comes to grain. Is this forged or stock removal, did you do any normalizing, what type of steel, and what process did you use to get that result...

    Forging with natural gas

Oh and I forgot to add. That's awesome about Tony Bose. I met him at blade show a few years ago outside smoking when I used to smoke. He was a really nice guy and was awesome talking with him. He also makes a mean slip joint :)

    Forging with natural gas

I did some research on this a while back and was told something along the lines of you don't have enough pressure coming from the gas meter, but I'm not sure how that equates to your situation. I have seen some people do it, but I can't remember what steps they had to take. I believe there is a...

    The Kiln

I agree with the other guys here saying it's not going to be good for knifemaking. I built my own, I think with steel for the casing, fire bricks, elements, pid, solid state relay and a box to house the electronics I paid around $650. Not an easy build but it works great for the last couple years

    Easy website builder?

I use wix.com. Not only do they have a user friendly website builder, they also have a built in store front where you can sell your stuff. If you do choose to use them just don't use their merchant services to sell you knives, they will block the payment. For that I use square and paypal and...

    What ? Another plunge question?

I have been grinding freehand for 3 years pretty much the same way Ed describes. Another tip to cleaning up plunge cuts is to use gator belts...they fit nicely into plunges and polish them right up :)
