knife forged in mimetic san mai

Are those quartz inclusions? I would test for serpentine/jade with my knife. The serpentine would scratch. I started doing that with anything that had a glassy appearance. Stones that are harder than the hardness of my knives I only use diamond abrasives. But I noticed some of my grinder...

knife forged in mimetic san mai

I have used non-stabilized serpentine (black jade?) and decided to have a couple scales of it stabilized. I also have a jasper/agate/chert in process. These are glassy, high silica, so I don't think they'd need it, but decided to try it anyway on the serpentine. I doubt if there will be...

knife forged in mimetic san mai

Yep. I have some black and white marble also that I am planning to use. I believe it is from Portugal. I picked it up from a friend overseas and carried it home half way around the world. Any thoughts on stabilizing stone for knife handles? I have done it - just curious...

I do want to try this at some point.

    Low and Knotty

Looks good - it's got a lot to look at even with the low layer.

    opinions wanted.

It looks similar to a design I'm working on. I like your take. I had a hard time envisioning how the handle would look so I appreciate your pictures/post. I think a tapered would add to the overall flow.

    yakut knives

I do want to keep this one. It doesn't seem like it, but sharpening this kind of edge is pretty easy.

    yakut knives

Here's some finished shots of the knife alone. Still need to decide on any type of cord wrap. I also need to build the sheath. The antler finished up nice. This is Fuller's varnish. It could use some sanding, but I want to move on to #2 sometime soon.

    Stone WIP

starting at about 6:00 - about the difficulty of telling the difference between types of chalcedony. I do a scratch test when I'm rockhounding. I'm hoping it's a rare color of jade.....

    Stone WIP

I agree, I do think finding and using them can be rewarding. People also like buying something sourced locally. The drawbacks are identifying it for sales purposes and the time it takes to process usable material. I will be researching the process for accurate identification. This was the...

    Stone WIP

I was able to get these heat treated again, but lost the edge on one due to over grinding again. I either ground too high or we are having long days so I may not be judging the color right in the evenings. I'm done the forge until I can get out of the natural light. The other is in process. I...

    Anler scales!

Looks good, man. Antler kinda pays off right at the end, imo. Blade looks good, too.

Any simple way to guess steel type?

I wonder if the just surface is hardened. Etching will give indication of what might be in it too. (I.e. 80crv2 etches lighter than 1095 b/c of alloying).

    yakut knives

The handle is probably 5". I think a partial standard or coxcomb wrap will suit it.

    yakut knives

Since the back of the handle is kinda canted I glued it up in two stages throughout the day today. I didn't think I could keep the joints closed with what I have. Also because of the cant, I'm going to let this cure 72 hrs before I peen over the tang.

Filling worm holes in Osage Orange

They probably make pigment out of grubs....or epoxy...or chewing gum or red jello.
