    Temper question

Is the retained austenite conversion time between quench & temper a function on minutes, hours, or days?

    First welding machine

Just remember that "multipurpose" machines compromise somewhere, unless you are talking high-dollar industrial machines. I'd suggest focusing on the method (MIG) that you want and get the most capable machine you can afford to do that method. There is marketing hype in welders, too. For...

    Temper question

That's a good question. I believe that the reason is if any potentially catastrophic latent stresses are imparted during quench, getting into temper may relieve those latent stresses before time and/or circumstance allows those stresses to manifest in cracks or deformations. In other words, I...

    First welding machine

Consider PrimeWeld: https://primeweld.com/collections/mig-welders I have their TIG unit and love it. If I add a MIG unit it will be their gas unit, but they have a fluxcore unit that should fit your budget. Warranty & support (haven't needed) are better than most, and their technical manuals...

    First post, first knife made

Keep it up. Consider beveling or sanding a radius into the inside diameter of your lanyard tube edges. It looks like your paracord may be short lived as is. Fun hobby, eh?

WIP: Full Featured 2x72 for under $1500?!? Housemade Gen 4 Revolution Kit Build

I added a HM True-Tilt bevel table with the money left in my $1500 budget: That’s a $135 accessory, so I’m still under $1500 total!

I don't mind constructive weld criticism at all. I'm self-taught and only been at it sporadically for around a year....enough to finish one 80lb bottle of argon. Those are not my best welds, but the are a good example of me letting the heat build up at the end of my string, and me panicking...

I had to focus on my real job for a bit, but I got around to designing & fabbing up a D-plate extension to accommodate a 6” contact wheel for my platen arm. I made a support gusset for added rigidity, but I’m not sure it’s necessary. What do y’all think? I’m interested in your thoughts on...

    First time using Vinegaroon...

Vinegaroon. Huh. Never heard of it, looked it up. This is why forums like this are so valuable. A very simple and elegant solution (no pun intended) to a frustrating problem.

    Etching 15n20?

What’s the best way to darken 15n20? I know it’s meant to stay bright with its Ni content in pattern welded applications, but if used as a mono-steel blade is it possible for the flats be effectively darkened to contrast the bevels? I tried some cold blue and it came out pretty blotchy &...

Thank you, fellas. The machine is done as far a fab & assembly go, but I still have a few "upgrades" to share. One is a really cool True-Tilt bevel grinding table accessory that I'll fit up. The other is an addition to the platen D-plate that will allow a 6" contact wheel in lieu of the 2"...

Well, after a week of deep, deep soul searching, multivariable calculus, some dark web research, intense meditation, and several contemplating pipes stuffed with Boswell’s Best, I’m happy (and kinda proud) to report that I believe I have the VFD programming issue figured out. I want to give a...

    1x30 Platen

He wouldn't need to replace the existing one, just attach his new platen on top of the old one. No fab required, and he can utilize the existing adjustability of the stock platen mount. I did this exact thing with a 2x42 and it was super easy.

    1x30 Platen

You could easily heat treat and temper a piece of inexpensive 10XX steel and weld, JB Weld, bolt, or otherwise fasten to the existing stamped steel platen you have. You could also use non-hardened flat stock and attach a ceramic glass platen liner for an excellent upgrade in flatness & heat...

Got the handle material shaped & polished. First time using this material and it turned out pretty cool. Sanded up to 800 grit and buffed with a little brown tripoli. I decided to just ignore the oversized holes in the handle & just let the epoxy do its job.
