    W2 Bowie

Thanks everyone! The blade is 8 3/4” from guard to tip. It looks longer in the pictures.

    W2 Bowie

I finished the Bowie with the w2 blade with a hamon. The guard is wrought iron from an old anchor chain. The koa handle has a heirloom/museum fit. I was trying to come up with an idea for stamping on the sheath to really tie it to the knife and decided on this. I think the hamon on it...

What's going on in your shop?

I do this on all my blades that have an etched finish (damascus & hamons). Once I have the handles glued on, I always tape the blades up. When I get ready to sharpen, I just leave it on the etched blades.

    Gut Hook Skinner

I now use a 1/2” small wheel on the 2 x 72 to grind my gut hooks. I go to a 600 grit belt, then use a 1/2” aluminum rod I made wrapped with 800 grit paper to sharpen the gut hook. I must be the odd one who likes making gut hooks. One trick is to start with a raised spine to grind the gut hook...

Do you listen to podcasts? The guys on Mark of the Maker talk a lot of history on past and present makers and have interviewed several makers. Bob Terzoula was one of them.

    Belt grinder

I would stick with the 1 1/2" tool arms. It would not be fun retrofitting each new attachment you buy to fit the 2" grinder.

    Large run of Chefs

I have them water jet blanks for me. I sent templates out of 1/4” plywood and they did the cad work. 8 designs cost me $90 for the cad work. Their cuts are not perfectly square by about .004” on 1/16” thick blank. I have them cut 1/8” pin holes and they are slightly under sized. I just drill...

    Kimmi's Cutlery Photos

Just got this photo edit back from Caleb Royer of my gut hook model. It’s out of a 69 layer twist damascus with customer supplied rosewood for the handle. I think this is the best damascus I have made. It came out so clean and even. I believe the rounding die I used before twisting helped with...

    Kimmi's Cutlery Photos

Just got a couple photos back from Jocelyn Frasier. She did a wonderful job editing these for me. The first one is a 4" Hunter out of twist damascus with walnut burl for the handle. The second is my Freedom model out of the same damascus with Ironwood scales. The background on this...

When do you consider yourself a knifemaker?

You forgot promptly catching that bandage on fire from the grinding sparks. Been there done that.

What's going on in your shop?

It’s some kind of rosewood supplied by the customer. He bought it from an estate sale of a guy that made guitars.

    temper question

During the first cycle, retained austenite can be converted to untempered martensite. The second cycle is needed to temper this untempered martensite.

    working desert ironwood

I’ve found that an aluminum oxide belt works better for me than a ceramic belt on dense, oily woods.
