Forge and knife shaped object (non hardenable)

I should say the depths mention are for small scale case hardening like his file video. Industrial depths will vary depending on wear specs. In those case ur talking from a few thousand to millimeters. Surface hardness might be a 60 RC, but after transition zone the core might only be a 20RC.

Forge and knife shaped object (non hardenable)

His comments about being hardened all the way through are misleading . The actual case hardening only extends a .010 to maybe .040 in thickness depending on carbon source and soak time. After that the steel might have carbon in it buts its diffinately softer. Using his method, It takes days...

    Re-handle opinions…

I'd try MT Bobs first suggestion. Then I'd find what social media sites the relative frequents and post some comments about the handle he modified. I'd bet he's posted pictures of his rehandle job. Lastly if you have an on line site I'd post the picture, with the big disclaimer of...That is not...

    Anyony using Kirinite for scales?

kirinite and acetone. So far I've never had any trouble using acetone to clean up epoxy on kirinite scales, no hazing that I've noticed. Kirinite and Fcl. Sorry, can't say. Never tried it with the white pearl.

    Dagger question

FYI. The old Gerber Guardian dagger was .181 thick at Riccaso and 3.375 long. Just remember as you get further into build. The dagger is a cut just waiting to happen.

    Dagger question

Only done a couple. Steel was either .187 or .211 with hidden or through tang. Blade lengths were between 4.5 to 5.5 inches. They test your grinding skills as keeping both sides symmetrical and centered is a challenge. I'd start with some cheap 1018 steel and do some practice grinds first.

    ban

Spam bomb? I'd say that this is an example of someone highjacking an old member name and password. Lavero join date is 2014 yet hasn't posted since around that time. His last post was about knives not this junk. And hes taken to posting to Arabic sites when he claimed to be in Central...

    Glass platen?

I sometimes use magnets to hold longer stock. A glass platen allows me to use a strong magnet. A steel platen grabs the magnet and causes a hesitation. Hated those little gouges caused by that grab. Glass cured that. Ditto the static buildup. Annoying

    Glass platen?

interesting question that got me looking. The glazing on a tile isn't very thick but on a mohs hardness scale it pretty tough approaching an 8. When compared to metal that's pretty hard. My concern would be wearability and smoothness of tile. Any imperfections in the tile will translate through...

Danger Will Robinson! Danger! The importance of good air and PPE in your shop

Careful with the green thumb stuff. Should you prove to have one and the yard starts looking great, the significant other will expect it to be kept looking nice. That'll take away from knife time when things get better!

    A new request…

Bruce nailed it. Even though we knew there were no trees for shelter, they still insisted that they needed a machete. I suspect there were some kickbacks going on with the big knife makers of the time. OR..Maybe there's still something up we dont know about!

    A new request…

I knew it was a funny! The bugs hadn't got to moon in 60/70's. However since we didn't have laser guns so we needed protection from other things . Course i never figured out what they were going to whittle tools from since the Martians deforestation the moon early on

    A new request…

Sorry to say. GEE! That looks knife looks really familiar.! Ironically the thought process at that time was since most of the returns were focused on the tropics latitudes a small machete like tool was appropriate. With the exception of the saw back, thats an exact replica of the machete they...

    A new request…

I might be stepping into deep doodoo. But here goes. My survival experience is civilian and military related. As a civilian I carry whats typically a hunter style but the blades lengths tend to 5.5-7 inches. As military I carried issued knives or copied what the locals used. In Panama it was a...

    Belt grinder

If I were to do it again I'd go with a KMG w/ tilt. Minimum 1.5 horse motor preferably 240v. And variable speed a must. once you learn to use it it'll save u time and money. However my main is a Pheer, 1 horse 2x72. Variable speed. Good solid tool, tracks well however my motors to small , if I...
