Grind Serrations with a Profile Grinder? What'da Ya Think?

New tools are rarely a bad thing, and that one looks like doozy! Whether or not I'd pick one up for serrations would depend mostly on the cost of entry, and even then, how often I'd try to use it for serrations would be questionable. I imagine you could do it just as well (and probably faster...

    help plunge lines!!!!!!!

A file guide might help. You might also try saving the plunges until closer to the end for final cleanup. Part of your ability to do that will depend on how stable your grinder's tracking is while grinding toward the edge of your platen or wheel. Also, make sure you're using a fresh sharp belt.

    A Hunter, a Boner, and a Chef Don’t Walk into a Bar

BTW, the knives (and sheath) look really good. Don't be afraid to round those handles a bit more. I'm sure they feel pretty good as is, but they look like they'd feel better with a little more curves. I don't know about anyone else, but my boners always feel better when they're a bit more round...

What's the concentration? FYI, you can get 1 gallon (132 oz) from eBay (38-42% solution) for around $45, free shipping.

    New shop question

You can never have too many quick connect air line drops. A couple years or so ago, I ran a drop to each corner of my shop, as well as mounting an overhead 50' hose reel that I'm actually thinking about more centrally locating, or possibly getting a second. If every single tool had a blow gun...

Not funny to me April fools

Or when they have a perpetual discount code. Why not just price them reasonably to begin with? I don’t mind the occasional “special”, but if you’re offering 10-15% through the same code all year long, just lower the prices already.

Not funny to me April fools

I see a lot of "instagram" makers using and advertising for Combat Abrasives. When I looked at what they cost, I can only assume that the majority of the makers running ads for them are getting some kind of discount, or maybe they're just not as attached to their money as I am. Based on the...

First Knife Order - need a few opinions please

I'm not sure the nervousness ever goes away completely, and If you're like most of us, you'll one day look (or think) back on this first knife you sold and wonder how you ever accepted money for it... :D Seriously though, congrats on the first sale. Make sure to post some pics of the finished...

    Easy and cheap file handles

I've got a handful of golf ball handled tools out in the shop as we speak. Another trick I saw somebody do a while back (maybe it was Wranglerstar on youtube?) was to press a steel nut into the golf ball in order to give it a little more strength when you press your file tang in. The nut has a...

    Scam from another blade forum

Yikes.... If somebody asks (or even worse, demands) F&F, that's usually a sure sign to run the other way, as you have zero recourse through PayPal. Heck, you may be buying something from the most honest person on the planet. What if they get hit by a bus on their way to the Post Office to drop...

    Your opinion on "Cutlery Corner"

Used to love watching them in the early morning hours back when Tom O'Dell was hosting. Never bought anything from them though. Most of their knives are on the very lower end of the import brands, and often times can be found cheaper else where. They always inflated the "retail value" of their...

    That hurt (Graphic bloody picture)

I've got a bad habit of grabbing and feathering my lathe chuck to slow it down after turning the machine off. Now, normally I don't do this when the jaws extend past the outer periphery of the chuck, but like it I said: Bad habit. I'm not sure if my index and middle finger tips were as much...

    Epoxy Curing Box?

I've just put a ceiling mounted heater in my shop that keeps it at a minimum of 50F while I'm not in there, but I've been thinking about the need for something similar just to help keep my adhesives at a more consistent temp. My plan was to just use an old insulated cooler with a small...

Waterjet? Plasma? Laser? What is best to cut out blade blanks?

It really depends on how you want to make your knives, and a lot will also depend on the quality of your CAD files as well as the vendor who's going to run them. The HAZ (heat affected zone) is something that can be worked around pretty easily if you use carbide tooling. With ANY of the three...
