They are starting to look like knives...

Well, they are what I am interested in doing, and perhaps maybe some cutlery. Fixed blades and swords and all that jazz just don't do it for me. And I really have no interest whatsoever in blacksmithing. So, I figure I could focus all that I don't need to learn or do in smithing, at designing...

They are starting to look like knives...

So now that I have the bolsters on I did some grinding to get them close to shape and ....... Woohooo initial fitup! I have 2 more to do, and I think I need a spacing liner for the sunfish/toenail bit it is getting there. Mostly the fitups seem close. The lady's leg seems like there is a bunch...

    Another mill minimum question

Price point is "as little as possible, to get enough to be sufficient". And that isn't really as smart @$$ of an answer as it sounds. At this point, I don't have a budget for it, since I spent pretty much all I intended on the bend grinder, and HT furnace. So, if there is something I can do...

    Spot welder?

Do you just hit it once?

    Spot welder?

Yeah, I'm not interested in casting metal yet. First stabilization, then perhaps micarta, some pen turning blanks... Metal casting, can wait...

    Another mill minimum question

I am seeing Sherline come up for sale used, and they seem to be small. It is also odd that they don't have a proper quill, so I assume you have to drill with a wheel. I am also seeing the old Emco/Unimat combination lathe and mill come up. Understanding the weight issue, are these sufficient...

    Spot welder?

okay, so that is certainly another use for a mill. So do people make the liners from Nickel Silver too then? I hadn't considered it. I was thinking the liners would always be brass, and the bolsters would be either NS or brass to go with. But, I assume one could also make the liners from NS, or...

    Spot welder?

But I am in NC :) All I really want is a simpler way to attach the bolsters'. It looks like the ones I got from the Queen Cutlery surplus were somehow stamped/staked in place. I can grab them with pliers and rotate them. Right now soldering is not a a comfortable process. Seems too...

    Spot welder?

Just did 5 sets soldered. Didn't enjoy it ... Need suggestions to make it more fun. :)

    Spot welder?

So I have heard that people spot weld bolsters. What kind of machine is used to do this? What are the implications? Can I do this with brass liners (3/32) and nickel silver or brass bolsters (1/8)? Is this still possible when working with SS or Titanium?

    Epoxy ??

I don't think I needed to add the pins. But, I am also testing my capabilities for accomplishing a few "precision" tasks using only the DP. Well silver solder is even hotter and I thought of that

    Epoxy ??

I will keep that in mind if they pop. Of course, I can fit a fingernail between them on one end and a beer can shim on the opposite end. Precision gluing is apparently not really my thing :)

    File Guide

I epoxied a pair of carbide tool bits to the faces. Then I tested my ability to drill a straight square hole C (0.242) and subsequently ream it to 0.2495 and 0.251. I think I did well with the initial hole. And my plan was to replace the drill bit with the (press fit) 0.2495 reamer and ream...

    Epoxy ??

So, this morning it is finally hard. This particular usage is questionable as I am epoxying carbide tooling bits onto mild steel. This really should be done with silver solder, but I don't have any at the moment, and I didn't feel like dragging out the O/A rig anyway :) So I epoxied tool bits...

    Epoxy ??

In my whole life epoxy has always been a hot or miss tool. I have never had consistency from one usage to the next. So many people love epoxy and seem to use it all the time. So it must be a technique problem. I am using regular JB Weld. Pulling equal length beads and then mixing until same...

    Reading List recommendations

Consider that my main interest is classical folders, and other folding types. I just completed my second recommended book. What would someone else recommend. Here's the two I have been through so far: Slip-joint Folder Designing and Building - Steve Culver The Lockback Knife: From first...
