    Knife design ipad

Inkscape is awesome for drawing stuff. You can trace things really well also. It takes a little practice, but given a nice straight on view I can outline a knife in less than 10 minutes. There is also a "trace bitmap" feature but it doesn't exactly work the way you think. I have used it, but...

    New toy in the shop

Yeah. I haven't come up with anything steel that I need to turn. Phosphor/Aluminum Bronze, brass, nickel silver, and perhaps some precision sizing on some stainless but thinking about a few thou to take some .098 down to 3/32 or something like that. Not sure how I feel about making screws, but...

    New toy in the shop

Buying from HF is a matter of managing expectations. I think I have some pretty realistic expectations, and I am willing to deal with them as such. The way I see it, my mill is not the biggest, and for knives, folders and the such there don't seem to be many very large parts. If I have to run...

    New toy in the shop

Well, I couldn't resist with a 25% off coupon to pick up the little 7x10 lathe from HF. I just ordered some tooling from Amazon, and pretty soon there will be no stopping me. I am not sure exactly what it will be good for, but I am going to make some little round things for something :) That...

    Hex Anvil

apparently the jewelers call them riveting anvils too... lots of names for the same great hunk of steel.

    Hex Anvil

    Yes, that is the beast.

    Shrunken Scales

Got some campers. But two of them, Camco and a camilus Cub Scout both have severely shrunken scales/handle material. Also, an observation, the cub sideways especially in mineral oil, looks clear. Kind of like how a mirror is painted on one side. Plenty of work on that cub, locking liner has to...

    Hex Anvil

I recently picked up a couple hex anvils. They have a bunch of different sized holes, and a bunch of different sized slots. Can anyone tell me how these tools are meant to be used and what they can accomplish? It seems they are meant to do something with rivets and pins.

    Alternative Sources for Scale Material

I only mentioned PSI because when I started googling around for carriers of Kirinite and they came up first. I am almost certain that they are not the cheapest. Even for turning tools, when I want one of theirs "Benjamin's Best" I tend to go to Peach Tree Woodworking. Funny how the MFG can't...

    Alternative Sources for Scale Material

Here's something that might help someone. Disclaimer first: I bought these full price with my own money. Penn State Industries has not given me anything to say anything about this. Nor am I associated with Kirinite or Eagle Grips. Wouldn't hurt my feelings if they did, but I am sure they don't...

Never saw one but I want one. But here is a cad rendering of two of them (Cutler's Anvil, Stiddy, Steady Rest)

Up until now, I have only priced medium/high carbon steels in 3/32, 1/8, and 1/4". These particular designs seem to be working with something that starts out at 1-1/2". When I look on places like OnlineMetals the biggest I see are in the 1" thickness. And very high price when I try to get it to...

Never saw one but I want one. But here is a cad rendering of two of them (Cutler's Anvil, Stiddy, Steady Rest)

I don't know any wj places but the online ones aren't cheap. I am pretty sure that if I could get a chunk big enough I could actually machine one, though it seems like it might take some time. I have a hexagon on the way which should help with pins and whatever. I assume I can put a piece of...

Never saw one but I want one. But here is a cad rendering of two of them (Cutler's Anvil, Stiddy, Steady Rest)

I am reading through a repair book not, and I have also seen reference to this tool in another place. They always show some sort of engineered drawing, so I thought, great I will put it in CAD. The recommendation is always make them from some good hardenable steel. These things are 1-1/2" x...

Stocking up on Steel and Other Materials

It would seem like NJSB has decent prices and a good selection, at least as far as high carbon, and stainless but it also looks like shipping is right around $40 no matter what I put in the cart. I assume there would be some math involved to determine how much I need to buy for the price to...

Math and Bolster Shapes Classical Patterns (templates dies frames handles)

I would like to have a discussion about bolster shapes for the classical slipjoint patterns. If I eliminate the SAK shape, which seems dead on to be half circles connected tangentially with straight lines everything else gets a bit interesting. Each base shape has both symmetric and asymmetric...

A little more fun with CAD

I guess that is always an issue. I thought Chris Crawford handled it well.

A little more fun with CAD

Ken, is there one you would recommend that could both cut out the metal (nickel silver, brass, etc..) to make the shield, and also route the pocket in the handle material to receive it? Many times I see the small desktop CNC's and people say they are only good enough for engraving.
