    Japanese knife construction

That's it!!! Now the next thing that I have to figure out is how the Japanese smiths get the cladding to "roll over" a little bit to the hard side in Kasumi knives. One video I saw seemed to show the smith tapering the hagane piece top to bottom and putting the smaller end at the heel side...

    Japanese knife construction

What is they type of Japanese knife construction called where you split a pice of low carbon steel or other cladding material and make a "taco" for lack of a better way of describing it and then insert and forge weld a high carbon core? I am talking about a blade where the spine is cladding...

    Epoxy ??

G Flex is just West System resin, hardener and filler premixed to save you time. It is good stuff, but no better than "regular" West properly mixed. I think that the advantage of JB Weld is its ability to resist slightly higher temperatures.

    Cu mai?

People are using it because it's purty. Same with nickel. The best way to "control" carbon migration is to use steels with similar carbon content. ;) . Same with any damascus really. Purty. The mythology about the "damascus cutting effect" has been debunked for years.

    Cu mai?

On the other hand, If you were forge welding some san mai, would you prefer that the layers actually be forge welded together or merely hard soldered/brazed? Note that in a previous post, I said that I am not totally on board with the pure nickel thing. ;) As for the benefit of a hard steel...

    Cu mai?

Doesn't mean that I am going to order it from Takefu. ;) As for wrought, i use it for fittings because the contaminants make it look cool. i would not use if for a blade for the very same reason. And yes, I said "contaminants", because "impurities" seems a tad wishy washy. "Slag" will work if...

    Cu mai?

Hey, I'm just saying that copper went out of style for me as a blade material once I heard about those Hittite cats and their funky iron stuff. I told the Pharaoh that they had found the stuff under ground, so they didn't have to wait for Ra to drop little chunks of it out of the sky. ;) :D

    Epoxy ??

I use JB weld for guards and such instead of soldering. Its sticks, seals and leaves a dark line if any line at all. i would not use it for the handle. That is for West System.

    Cu mai?

I see dealers selling very expensive cu mai kitchen knives. Somebody expects them to cut. I personally have a bit of aversion to putting anything in a blillet that wont harden, even pure nickel.

    Cu mai?

So what is the logic behind smashing copper, a substance that does not really harden, into a steel blade?

    First production project

when I say excess capacity, I mean the ability to take on ANY outside work. This was a few years back, but when I was asking around, nobody was taking new work. Some of the firms were socked up with their own stuff and others were doing the "mid tech" version of what some today call the...

    First production project

Nice work, Jason. From my experience of a few years back trying to see if anyone would do kitchen knives, I am a tad surprised that White River had the excess capacity.

Why mess with Harbor Freight when you can just go to the supermarket and grab a gallon of store brand white vinegar? ;) Assuming best practices when forging because you are planning to not grind away all of your mistakes, overnight soak in vinegar and a session with the scotchbrite belt will do...
