    Garbage steel

Is san mai done for "mechanical" reasons or because high carbon steel was rare and expensive in the past? There is a lot of mythology surrounding Japanese cutlery, but answer me this. Who in the West would tell you that a forged monosteel blade is HARDER to do than a forge welded one and should...

    Scrap Damascus Dagger

Cool. Now related to my rece4nt crotchety old man post about garbage steelo, I would argue that you did not make this from "scrap" but form "drops" because it was leftover odd sized peices of stell that you had forge welded. So you know exactly what its makeup is. Scrapmascus is a kind of cool...

    Garbage steel

Not to offend anyone's material choices, but why are so many people infatuated with using "junk" or "mystery" steel for blades or to make damascus? Likewise, why are folks excited about including materials in damascus, sam mai, etc that does not harden like copper, pure nickel or even wrought...

    What to use

1075 is not 1080. It has less manganese, more like 1095. You can actually get a good hamon with high quality 1075. Use #50.

Help Identifying an Old Fixed Blade

That was an old Sheffield trick, IIRC. Some folks talk about the superiority of full tang knives, but in many cases, it was an issue of ease of production once decent steel became readily available to all. Lot easier just to slip on a guard and then rivet a couple of falt scales to the tang. Now...

    Guard for full tang knife

Is it just the light or does it look like there is a "center shadow" on the lower lobe of the guard?

    Tile welds strong enough?

For those of you who have done mosaic, would you trust a "Ferry Flip" tile welded blade for use as a kitchen knife? I have made a couple of blades like this, but they were thicker and not really expected to get too much hard use.

    Question

    Question

It was always a tad "dark webby" as you could not really search for it directly on the web. As someone mentioned, it was priavte with a soemwhat convoluted method of joining. At one point, you could not use a "free" email server like Yahoo or GMail if I recall. They also banned a bunch of people...
