I should be able too clamp the blade in at any angle and support the pin on the back side. One of theses hunters has 8 in total, it should also work for bolsters. I'm going to make an attachment for removing sights, and clamping 1911 slides and frames.

    Post here for design critique.

The blade is perfect size for whitetail. People have already mentioned the size of the handle. You might think about adding a little more of a point, there are some rear end spots on an animal that a point makes all the difference in the world.

    Water damage question

After reading this I tossed a knife that gets used for testing stupid ideas in my cooling bucket. The bucket has clean water and the knife is 1084. After 10 hours the results really surprised me. This is fresh out of the bucket with just a quick wipe down.

The mill is back up and running. Now it's time for some drilling, tapping, and welding.

    Ice

We just got 30% of our annual snow fall in 2 days. The weather people said 2 to 4 inches, ha! Our low last night was going to be 26, I woke up to -7.

    Edge damage question.

That looks familiar, I made a test knife out of 1084 with a standard heat treat. Ground a zero bevel edge. The knife survived, the brass rod test, a couple hundred cuts on sisal rope, chopping wood and antler. If you have tried to chop antler it is very hard on knives. It failed when I clamp a...

It is what it is. This machine was used before I got it. It obviously is in dire need of some TLC. I work on high end equipment everyday, one thing that I've learned about equipment. It doesn't matter how expensive it is, the only equipment that doesn't need maintaining or parts replacement...

Burned up a switch in the power feed this morning! I'm starting to think that something is trying to tell me that a domed pin jig should be simple. When I started designing it I was going to copy Nick Wheelers jig. Then I thought I have a mill, build it heavy duty for bolsters, and light gun...

Haha! It's a Cummins, same mill as the harbor freight variety with a different name. I've used quite a bit for small non knife related jobs. I think cutting a 3/4" X 1" slot in 1-1/2" 1018 is just a bit much.

I might be asking a little bit much from the poor mini mill. The feed table has come loose twice, and the head just tilted. After 11 hours with only bathroom breaks I'm going to call it a day.

It really wasn't that hard, just time consuming. I got tired of blowing chips out every 2 seconds, so I cobbled some stuff together.

It has been a slow start this morning. I started at 5 and just started milling. My mill decided to fall apart this morning. I had take it apart, tighten all the bolts, and tram everything.

Opaul I don't think that I'm ahead of anyone, you make really nice knives. It just depends on what your goal is. Do you want to make nice knives for a broad market, or do you want to target a small fit and finish driven market? I'm slow and spend too much time worrying about small details. So...

Haha! It's a simple tool that will take sometime to make. Hopefully in years to come it will pay off.

You've asked a tough question opaul. For me time is something that is not a consideration anymore. I used to focus on speeding things up because that's how you make more knives. Now the focus is just on improving what I'm making, not how long it takes. I try to fix all of the things that I'm not...
