    Shields and Maker's Marks

I would no say that it is important to make one's own shields to place on the scales unless you are having it judged and the rules require sole authorship. As far as stamping or electro engraving goes it might depend on metal you are using for the shield. Either should work if you are using...

    Home made Anvil?

As far as getting a cast iron ASO and welding a steel plate to it I see some problems. Stick welding will not give you a good connection to the cast iron base and cast iron is not the simplest thing to stick weld. Forge welding welding would be a nightmare. You would have to build an open...

2nd hand forged knife in the books

As far as the blade goes it's a little hard to say because of the lighting. It looks a bit like you have a apple seed grind on the blade but that could be the light. Smurf Masher makes good blades but he does stock removal which is a little different, and I'm not going to get into whether...

    1st hand forged knife

Try steaming the scales after cutting the blank from the stave then clamping it in a vice. I would recommend that you make the spine of the blade straight and then to a flat grind all the way to it. That looks more like a spear point with a sabre grind which could be good with some knives but...

How to clean up antique knives

I have gotten two antique (pre-1890) khurkuris from Atlanta Cutlery Corp. Sadly I missed out on a third knife that was on clearance. Anyway, both of the knives that I have are coated with gunk that probably started out as packing grease. I figure that I can clean the blades with a degreaser...

    Heat treating without big investment

The problem with a two fire brick forge with a hand torch is that you will quickly end up with a bunch of empty tanks to deal with. That's why I recommended a scaled down asperated burner run off a 35 propane tank. If you can find a small blower you might even be able to cobble together a...

    Heat treating without big investment

For simple heat treating equipment I would skip O1 or W1, and for that matter 1095; too complex of too high carbon level. The 1084 is fine. You could also try 1075 or even 5160, A two brick forge would be better than nothing but find an asperated burner. Just size the burner to the volume of...

    Question about AISI/SAE

If you can look up the alloy formula it will help you make sense of things. Also learn what the different elements do in the steel. By paying attention to the make up I learned that 9260 in the States is basically EN45 in the UK. Doug
