    Stacking AEB-L During Heat Treat

I use I use NJ Steel Baron's heat treat recipe since that's where I buy the steel. 15 minute soak at 1500 and 15 minutes at 1950. I only have one set of plates.

    Stacking AEB-L During Heat Treat

Need to heat treat six steak knives of .100 thickness AEB-L. Don't really want to run six heat treat cycles. Could these be stacked 2x2 or 3x3? Would I need to increase the soak time? Thanks!!

    Simple Tip For New Knifemakers

Amen. I do this because I enjoy it. Don’t want it to become a “job”. I do take some custom orders but very few.

    Simple Tip For New Knifemakers

I must be missing something. Seems like extra work and extra time to use epoxy. I've never had any trouble with pin alignment just using clamps. I use a couple of these and they are very secure. Don't have to worry about them slipping. Clamps

    Simple Tip For New Knifemakers

Are you using a quick set epoxy? I use a 24 hour cure so that technique wouldn’t work for me. I drill the first side insert some pins and clamp on the second side. Remove one pin and drill all the way through the second scale. Do the same with the other pins. No alignment issues.

    drill bits for tang holes

Are you drilling hardened steel? I buy just about all of my drill bits from Drills and Cutters.com. They work fine and last a long time. I resharpen my "F" drill bits. #30 for 1/8" pins and "F" for 1/4" "F" drill bits

    Ferric Formula

I usually take my scrap pieces and make Christmas gifts for the ladies in our family. See the fish on this piece. Wasn’t planned that way. Just happened.

I buy from him a lot on Facebook. Some billets I buy are 4 inches wide and 18 inches long. I can get four knives out of them. His prices are a little cheaper on Facebook. Lacy Smith is a really good guy to do business with. Got to visit a little while with him at Bladeshow this year.

    Ferric Formula

Looks good Bruce! Could be the difference in temp or just the difference in the steel itself. I use Alabama Damascus 98% of the time and it always takes a good etch.

    Ferric Formula

If you like your Damascus black (and I do). Try this. I had been using a 3:1 mix of distilled water and ferric. Then doing a coffee etch to get it black. This was done with 45% distilled water, 45% ferric and 10% apple cider vinegar. I really like it. :)
