Stay with 1/8 holes just use 1/4" wide lace..sorta like this.. ..motor cycle seat but same concept sir, it tightens the lacing and fills the holes...

Do a search for vinegroon...natural BLACK stain...cheap as dirt vinegar and steel wool you gotta make sure you soak the leather in baking soda solution after or the vinegar will do some unwanted etching!!!
