Cheap as heck, and square as can be. :)

    Next challenge

Always a full quench -- drawing the back or using clay will achieve the same effect. Edge-quenching tends to create more pearlite. Like others have said, you don't want to finish it to perfection before HT. 1/16 thick or more will be fine. Things warp, that is all there is to it -- an...

    Hamon line

Try not to use your sink! I use tupperware cereal holder-thingy for my FC.

    Square a drill press

Once you've got your benchtop trued up, put a small jack or chunk of wood under the table to keep it from bending and run a bolt through the head and into the column. These are the two places the drill will want to "bend" when drilling -- even light drilling. Use a couple of 1-2-3 blocks to...

    Steel for Hamon

W-2 and 1095 work best for me. :) W-1 is also excellent -- basically a "clean" version of 1095.

    2009 Halloween Folder

Thanks! :) I'm going to try and get a "WIP" thread up in my forum on how I made it.

    2009 Halloween Folder

Finally finished -- just in time! :D This is the third year of doing this and it is just fun. I get to play with lots o' orange G-10. This year's folder features a .187-thick W-2 blade that has a 3-inch cutting edge. It is about 7 3/4 open and 4 1/2 closed. .125 titanium for the lockside and...

    Check my HT Recipe

Always normalize. You never know what has happened with the steel before you got it, and you might as well start with a clean slate. :)

    Which Business Entity and Why?

I'm set up as an LLC. I went this way to help protect my personal assets. I also have business insurance to help protect my little business. I work out of my garage and guess what would happen if a fire started? My home insurance wouldn't cover it! The business insurance I have insures the...

    User names

Definitely a necessity. Every little bit helps! Of course; I have some people wonder if my last name is "Burchtree." :D
