I found this Hen & Rooster knife I forgot about. I realized why when I looked closer, lousy sheath. Poorly made and I could pull the knife out with the snap closed.
Well I'm no leather worker and have only a rotary leather punch and a couple of small punches but do have leather.
A utility knife, some cord, sail repair needles a screwback sam brown stud, a couple of small drill bits and some tiger thread and viola. Simple sturdy sheath that the knife won't come out of unless I release the strap from the stud.
I made a paper template and cut out both sides and the welt. Drilled the holes for stitching by eye (you can tell) after glue up and cut myself twice pulling the tiger thread tight (stings).
I sanded the edges and burnished with spit and the side of my utility knife. The texture I did by casing the leather and draping it around a heavy cardboard tube about 4" wide and tightly winding some cord around it while watching TV and let it sit overnight. Then made a cobra knot length with the same cord and casing again clamped it down flat on the leather with a paint stir stick to back it for the two horizontal stripe patterns (before assembly). Instead of cutting a recess for the stitching I used a small knitting hook and made a recessed "trench" after casing once again by pressing down and following my stitch holes front and back etc..
I put the little leather raised panel on the end of the retention strap to make it easier to open and close and help prevent the hole from distorting.
Some pecards' leather dressing rubbed in followed by 2 coats of Ren. wax and........
I really enjoyed it and this sheath is way better than the previous crappy one. I may invest in some leather working tools and learn to do it right.
