I made a simlar holder by putting a couple of neodymium magnet disks (available at most hardware, craft stores, walmart, etc...) on a piece of 3/8" mild steel stock and putting the blade directly on the magnets. This is a much better idea though, as it supports the blade across the whole length rather than just the magnet points.
The only downside I found from using magnets is that the blade gets magnetized too... so it tends to attract all kinds of metal dust when finishing the blade.
Lately, I've just been using double stick carpet tape on a block to hold the blade, but I might just go ahead and switch back to magnets for the conveinence. Plus it doesn't come loose when you dip your blades...
