What size steel for slipjoints?

What size steel do you most commonly start with for small slipjoints? Also, all I have ever worked with is precision ground. Is it really necessary or can you make it work even without a surface grinder? Thanks guys!

I start with 3/32" or 0.1" PG steel for most of the slipjoints that I make. If you don't have a surface grinder (I don't), you'll be glad you bought PG steel. You can do it without...just more lapping and aggravation involved.
