Question about filework

I'm new to this, working on 4 knives made of 440c stainless. I was wanting to do some filework on a couple of the knives on the handles. These knives will have to be sent out to be heat treated. Is it ok to do file work before heat treating? I've already done some file work on 1 knife, then started wondering if it could get damaged in some way during heat treating.

I suppose you increase the risk of having a blade crack during the HT process by doing filework before hand. That said, I have fileworked lots of stainless blades and so far have not had any problems (knock on wood). There are some patterns that I would not want to think about doing after HT. I'd say go for it.
