Question about a Case xx

I am not a collector,but I found this Case yesterday,while going
through a old box of tools that belong to my wifes uncle.I am guessing that it is old.I was just hopeing someone could tell
me about how old from the markings.

That case was made between 1980 and 1989
the S in the name is shaped like a lighting bolt.
case has a 10 dot system one dot removed for every year,
1980 would have 10 dots 1986 would have 4 dots. Get a loop and look
below the name to see how many dots there are. also the leters USA should be there.
on the other side of the blade should be a model #.
There is a web site called (all about pocket knives) go there and take a look.

To me that looks like a pattern 54 trapper, one of the most popular Case patterns.
Looking at the tang stamp, you can just make out 4 dots? and the USA underneath which would make this a 1986 model 6254.
The dot system was started in 1970, with a different stamp every decade and like John said one dot is removed per year.
It would surprise you where you can find old Case knives, I was looking at some in Tractor Supply the other day and in the display was a trapper with a stamp from 1999. I dont know why thay had it but it was new in the box. Needless to say it found a new home.
